Great Things to Do Near Sapphire

Get lost in Messinia

Take a map, and head for Filiatra, then Kiparisia and then take the inland route back through the villages of Aristomenis and Vlachopoulos. When you get lost, don't worry, you won't be lost for long as the next village is only a couple of kilometres away. You'll want to stop in all of them, as they are so pretty, very traditional and it's highly unlikely that you'll come across any other tourists throughout the entire day.

Private chef

Why not ask a local private chef to prepare a traditional meal within the comfort of your own holiday home - breakfasts and tailored menus available. The housekeepers also offer a shopping service should you wish to arrive at the villa and find the fridge fully stocked with groceries.

Ancient Olympia

You'll find Olympia on the road heading north towards the market town of Pyrgos. It is well signposted along the way. Spend an amazing day here visiting all the nooks and crannies of the original Olympic stadium which was also a temple of worship of Zeus.

Voidhokilia Beach

Swim in beautifully clean water, explore Nestor's Cave on the way, and have a wonderful walk around the lagoon. It has been recognised as a "Place of Particular Natural Beauty" and forms part of a protected area.

Visit Proti Island

Named after the sea god Proteus, this island (with very few inhabitants) is of archaeological interest due to its Mycenaean acropolis.

Play a round of golf

There are 4 well designed golf courses in the vicinity including the Bay Course at Costa Navarino and the Dunes Course. They enjoy pretty landscapes, lush valleys and coastal views. Guests will be interested to know that there is a discount on green fees at the Costa Navarino course.

Hire a boat and explore the Ioanian Sea

Discover secret coves and beaches only accessible via boat. Drop anchor near a pretty harbour to enjoy local dining options.

Polylimnio Waterfalls

Only accessible via a scenic 3km trail, this walk amongst olive trees, pine forests and wild flowers, is a vibrant experience.

Enjoy a pamper session around the pool

Massage therapy, private yoga sessions or personalised poolside workouts are all possible at Sapphire.

Visit the nearby village of Methoni

It is easy to spot this imposing Venetian castle that dominates the coastline. You can look around the castle, and the village itself, which offers excellent cafes and tavernas. Remember your bathing costume as well, as it also has a wonderful golden sandy beach.

Enjoy the watersports on offer

Along this beautiful stretch of coastline. The crystal-clear waters, colourful fish and coral, and underwater caves, shipwrecks and archaeological sites, make this area a popular spot to dive. Other activities on offer include windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and waterskiing.

Cookery class

A great opportunity to learn how to prepare Greek favourites using local ingredients such as olives, feta and vegetables.

Take a boat trip from Pylos

Drive down to the harbour, and take one of the excursion boats over to the arched Sfaktiria rock. You may well have seen this beautiful rock on many posters and postcards, but the only way to see it is from one of these excursion boats. It's well worth the trip, and the commentary from the captain is very interesting as he will tell you all about the sunken ships in the bay, casualties of the battle of Navarone.

Sunset supper

Some of the best tavernas can be found down at the waterfront in Gialova, sip wine and enjoy a tasty meal whilst watching the sun sink slowly into the ocean.

Bird watching

Ornithologists will know about the bird watching area at the Gialova lagoon, where you can see several different species of migrating wading birds, as well as the day to day hunters feeding off the plentiful supply of fish in this shallow lagoon.

Neda Waterfalls

The Neda River separates Ilia and Messinia and originates from Mount Lykaion. It flows through a gorge with forests and waterfalls and creates crystal-clear natural lakes.

Snorkelling

The best places for snorkelling are along the rocky shore at the end of the sandy Golden Beach. There are huge numbers of fish along here, as well as many varieties of shellfish - you'll have a whale of a time!

Visit the Nemea Winery

Drive to the town of Nemea in the northern region of the Peloponnese and visit the vast number of wineries there. Nemea wine is one of the most popular in Greece, and you will find varieties of it in all of the shops.
