This charming stone cottage with private pool is set in the verdant green countryside equidistant (a 30 minute drive) between two stunning Umbrian towns, Perugia and Todi.  From days spent relaxing on the terrace to days out and about discovering both the well known jewels and the hidden gems of Umbria, Casa Bambu is a great choice.

Enclosed by trees and a bamboo (bambu) hedge, Casa Bambu has a large lawned garden and a delightful wraparound terrace. Decorated with pots teeming with flowers and plants and a glorious olive tree, the terrace is furnished for alfresco dining and relaxing and, we are sure, will be used morning through to night.  From here, French doors lead into the house. The interior is traditional and simple, with tiled floors and the quintessential wood beams of an Umbrian property. With a bedroom and shower room on each floor, it is ideal for small groups, whether it be two couples or two friends.

The surrounding countryside, a patchwork of hills and trees, reveals tiny villages, walking and cycling trails and local restaurants serving delicious dishes and wine (the nearest being 950m away). Within a 20 minute radius are five of Italy’s most beautiful villages (I Borghi Piu Belli d’Italia): Torgiano, Bettona, Deruta, Montefalco, Giano dell’Umbria, each with its own unique characteristics. And whilst landlocked Umbria is known as the green heart of Italy, Lake Trasimeno is the place to go during the summer for watersports, boat trips, beaches and lakeside promenades, stopping every now and then for a gelato.

Great Things to Do Near Casa Bambu

I Borghi Piu Belli d'Italia

The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy Association was founded in 2002 with the aim of enhancing and promoting the great heritage of history, art, culture and landscapes present in small Italian towns.  A “Borgo” is a fascinating small Italian town, generally fortified and dating back to the period from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.  Umbria has 33 in total, 5 of them being within a 20 minute drive of Casa Bambu:  Deruta, Torgiano, BEttona, Montefalco, Giano dell’Umbria.

Tozzetti and Baci

Sweet treats in the form of pastries and chocolates: 'tozzetti' are almond biscuit-like pastries (try them dunked in a glass of vinsanto); 'baci' are made of hazelnuts and dark chocolates, wrapped in a silver wrapper with blue stars.  Both are delicious!

Città della Domenica - fun for the kids!

This animal and amusement park opened in 1963, and is still a favourite! Occupying 100 acres on a hillside overlooking Perugia, it is a lovely setting for a family day out. There is plenty of parkland to roam, or enjoy the views from the comfort of the little train. There are many animals to see, including kangaroos, ostriches, llamas, donkeys and many birds. In the farm area, children can get hands on and help to milk the cows! There are also themed areas to explore such as Pinocchio’s Village and Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, a Medieval zone, a space shuttle and the Wild West. A programme of activities and shows runs each day. Other attractions include mini-karts, mini-boats, slides, a maze and inflatable play area.

Simply go for a drive through the countryside.

The true beauty of Umbria is before you - amazing views, hilltop villages, vineyards... Stop when you feel like it, wander around a village, have a leisurely lunch somewhere, the choice is yours.

Monte Subasio National Park

Assisi sits within this National Park, a landscape of valley pastures and wooded hillsides with abundant flora and fauna. Here you can enjoy various walks in the park, or you could take the car to the summit of Monte Subasio for an unforgettable view.

A visit to Assisi is a must.

World famous, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, Assisi attracts a lot of tourists so we suggest heading there late afternoon / early evening when the crowds have gone, and the streets are quiet to get a true feeling for the town and its spiritual history.

Discover Perugia, the city of art and history

There is plenty to see in Perugia - many superb churches and palazzi, and the Galleria Nazionale Umbria houses one of the great picture collections of central Italy, including works by Perugino and Piero della Francesca. It is lovely simply to wander round and soak up the atmosphere, stopping for refreshment as the whim takes in the many restaurants and cafes!

Try 'porchetta'

pork stuffed with liver, pepper, garlic, salt and wild fennel, then cooked on a spit over a wood fire. Available all over Italy, it is, however, of Umbrian origin!

Majolica ceramics of Deruta

Deruta is one of the most famous centres in Italy for majolica ceramics and chinaware. The handpainted colourful designs are gorgeous - blue, orange and yellow are the predominant colours used - perhaps to reflect the colours of the summer sky and sun.  There are a number of shops and factories to visit - take a stroll around the 'old town' and its specialist shops and see what catches your eye.

Spend the morning at the market

The weekly open-air market is part of Italian life. Browse the stalls laden with produce, take in the sights and scents, and mingle with the locals before finishing with a coffee or a bite of lunch. Marsciano and Montefalco hold their markets on a Monday morning, Todi on a Saturday morning,

Enjoy a lazy day by the pool

Relax on the terrace with a glass of wine. Catch up on all the books you have been meaning to read for ages.

Calici di Stelle

Visit Montefalco on 10th August for the 'Calici di Stelle', the night of the Shooting Stars. You will be able to sample local wines and food during the evening while watching the sky for shooting stars.

Follow the signs

to the little hamlet of Canalicchio, about a 15min drive from the house. The entire hamlet has been restored and is now a hotel, with a lovely restaurant. Go for dinner and enjoy the views from the terraces.
