All the ingredients are here for a wonderful holiday at this inviting home with its blend of new and old, comfort and character. And being just a few minutes’ drive from the ‘Maldive’ beaches of the Salento coastline is the cherry on the cake.

Inside, original features and materials like exposed stonework and vaulted ceilings are married with modern design such as picture windows in the kitchen diner, along with eye-catching fittings and decorative pieces. Each bedroom has its own en suite facilities, with one bedroom enjoying additional privacy being located in the traditional stone ‘pajara’ away from the main house.

A large covered terrace beside the house is set up for alfresco dining, and the view across the pool towards the south-west particularly comes into its own when there is a spectacular sunset. Several steps lead down from here towards the glittering pool, which has full width steps for easy access. The encircling grounds are spacious and thoughtfully landscaped with organically curving pathways and native plants.

The nearest restaurants and minimarkets are found in Torre Vado (3km), named after the fortress tower which watches over the marina and the little beach. Large sandy beaches close by include Pescoluse and Posto Vecchio (5km) whose striking clear turquoise waters have led to this stretch of coastline collecting the nickname ‘the Maldives of Salento’.

At the southernmost point of Puglia, the harbour town of Santa Maria di Leuca (8km) offers boat trips and water sports, fabulous coastal walks and seafood restaurants. Heading north, the larger towns of Lecce (78km) and Otranto (57km) are within easy reach for an interesting and enjoyable day trip.

Great Things to Do Near Il Pasulo

Florence of the South

Otherwise known as Lecce, the capital of Puglia. It is a city that fully embraced the Baroque style of architecture. Much remains today making Lecce a wonderful city to walk around. Visit the Basilica di Santa Croce and see if you can spot, on its ornate façade, griffins, dodos, angels and sheep…

Ugento

Small but perfectly formed, Ugento is worth a visit for its archaeological heritage, including Baroque churches, an archaeological museum, and Messapian remains (the Messapians were a tribe who inhabited this region in classical antiquity).

A coastal hike

Don your walking shoes for a breathtaking walk along the cliffs on the east coast of the Salento peninsula. Just north of Santa Maria di Leuca, the 'Sentiero delle Cipolliane' route is 2.5km, or 5km including the return, and features caves, traditional stone dwellings and a stunning natural setting.

Hit the beach!

The stretch of coastline around Pescoluse is often referred to as the 'Maldives of Salento', due to the fabulously clear waters and soft light sand. So pack your beach bag and find a piece of paradise...

Take a boat trip

to explore the rugged coastline and captivating caves around Santa Maria di Leuca, on both the Ionian and the Adriatic sides of the peninsula.

Local delicacies await

A simple local favourite is Pittule, fried dough balls which are often made for festive occasions. Another street food, Pucce are soft rolls made with semolina flour bread rolls and baked in wood ovens. They can have various fillings such as olives, tomatoes and ricotta. And Pitta di Patate is a cheese-topped potato pie with a tasty filling of tomatoes, onions, capers, black olives, and anchovies.

Enjoy sunset drinks

looking over the marina of Leuca, at the very bottom of the heel of the 'boot' of Italy! Follow up with a fresh seafood platter at one of the ristoranti on the harbourfront.

Try a water sport

Surf sports and sailing are popular here, and some companies offer kayak and SUP hire. There are also dive schools offering full PADI courses down to beginner level snorkelling tours.

Day trip to Otranto

One of the larger towns in the area, Otranto is culturally rich, with its 15th century Aragonese Castle and an 11th-century Cathedral famous for its unusual mosaic floors. Wander its seafront, wide squares and back streets filled with boutiques and restaurants. The Punta Palascìa Lighthouse just south of the town marks the most easterly point of mainland Italy.

Go snorkelling

The unbelievably clear waters of the Salento coastline are perfect for snorkellers, so take your gear down to the sea and see what you can see!

At land's end

Santa María di Leuca sits at the meeting of the Ionian and Adriatic seas on Puglia’s southern tip, and famously has both stunning sunrises and spectacular sunsets! The 18th century Basilica of Santa Maria on the cliff watches over the bustling harbour and promenade, lined with Art Nouveau villas. Stop at one of the many restaurants and bars for a coffee, a leisurely fish lunch, or a cocktail.
