Nestled in the countryside, equidistant from two lovely città bianche, Ostuni and Carovigno, each just a 10-minute drive away, L’Olivetta combines the charm of traditional stone architecture with the clean simplicity of a modern villa, designed for effortless holiday living.

A broad, shaded veranda runs along the stone façade. Furnished with comfortable outdoor seating, it offers an immediate invitation to slow down and relax. Step inside and the easy-going atmosphere continues, with harmonious neutral tones and natural materials creating a calm and welcoming interior. Vaulted ceilings and exposed stone are a nod to the local architectural vernacular, while large glazed doors allow the light to flood in and create a natural connection between indoors and out.

Holidays here are all about spending time outside, and L’Olivetta makes it a delight. Set entirely on one level, the garden brings together lawns, terraces and, of course, the swimming pool. Generously sized and surrounded by warm natural-stone paving, the pool is an inviting spot for long, lazy days in the sunshine. A second covered terrace is dedicated to outdoor dining, with a barbecue and preparation area close at hand for leisurely lunches and dinners.

Beyond the villa, the area’s whitewashed towns are an absolute delight, whether you are visiting during the day or heading out in the evening for a leisurely stroll, dinner or simply a gelato. A day at the beach is also highly recommended. The nearest is at Torre Santa Sabina, just 20 minutes away, while further exploration of the coastline reveals a wonderful choice of sandy beaches, coves and picturesque seaside towns. Monopoli is one of our favourites, with Polignano a Mare, dramatically perched above the Adriatic, also worth a visit.

For a truly memorable day out, head across the border into Basilicata to discover Matera. This extraordinary and atmospheric town, renowned for its ancient cave dwellings, is a spectacular place to explore and is sure to enchant.

Great Things to Do Near L'Olivetta

La Città della 'Nzegna

Carovigno is known as ‘La Città della ‘Nzegna’ – the town of flags. It is renowned for its troupes of ‘sbandieratori’ who put on spectacular displays of flag throwing which are incredible to witness. Huge colourful flags are thrown between the men in displays of pageantry, accompanied by the sounds of drums and trumpets. If you get a chance to watch, do so – they are very impressive.

Go underground & visit the ‘Grotte di Castellana’

The town of Castellana is famous for its network of caves, the largest in Italy. They are over 3km in length, go to a depth of 122m, and the temperature stays a constant 16.5C, so a refreshing place to visit when the outside temperatures soar. There are a couple of tours available: visit the full length or a shorter version of 1km. 
 

Florence of the South

Otherwise known as Lecce, the capital of Puglia. It is a city that fully embraced the Baroque style of architecture. Much remains today making Lecce a wonderful city to walk around. Visit the Basilica di Santa Croce and see if you can spot, on its ornate façade, griffins, dodos, angels and sheep… 

Città Bianche

The white towns of the Valle d’Itria are charming places to wander around. They all have the whitewashed buildings and a ‘centro storico’ (historic centre) with a maze of narrow streets but each one is different. Spend a morning in each (followed by lunch of course) to discover its charm. 
 

Weekly markets

Puglia is known as the Garden of Italy, supplying the country with vegetables and fruit, so where better to shop than at the local market? Ostuni's weekly market takes place on Friday morning, or you could visit Cisternino on Monday, Martina Franca on Wednesday, Alberobello on Thursday, Locorotondo on Friday. Why not head to one of the local restaurants for lunch afterwards?

Walk (run?) in the footsteps of Bond

and visit Matera, the fascinating troglodyte city just over the border in Basilicata. It has many accolades: a UNESCO World Heritage Site, European City of Culture in 2019 and the location of some great scenes in the Bond film 'No Time to Die'.  

Un caffè alla Salentina

Have a coffee ‘alla Salentina’, an iced glass with 5 ice cubes, a layer of almond milk and hot coffee. Delicioso!

Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve

Named after the tower that was built in the 16th century as part of a coastal defence system, the nature reserve is a protected area covering 8km of coastline. The area includes wetlands, dunes, marshes, Mediterranean maquis, agricultural land and is home to a variety of animals and birds. The coast and sea are also part of the protected zone, with the rocky seabed teeming with underwater fauna and flora. You can explore the area on foot and on bike, and go snorkelling and diving in the clear blue waters.

Picture postcard Polignano

Gracing many a postcard and Insta post, Polignano a Mare is a picture postcard seaside town – whitewashed houses line narrow streets and perch atop the cliffs with fabulous views over the turquoise sea and beaches below.

Marvellous Monopoli

The coastal town of Monopoli is one of our favourites.  We love the old town,with its narrow alleyways and small piazzas, the harbour where there is an array of colourful fishing boats bobbing gently on the water, and the impressive 16th Century fortress that juts out into the sea.  Be sure to have an gelato as you wander taking in the sights.  Finish the day with a paddle in the sea on the small beach on the edge of the old town, and maybe an apertivo in one of the nearby bars.      

Egnazia Archeological Park

One of the most important archeological sites in Puglia, Egnazia was a 13th Century BC Greek-Messapian town. Nowadays, you can explore the ruins (less than a third of the 40 hectare site has been fully exavacated) and discover the 3000yr+ history in the museum. An under-visted site, it doesn't seem to be on the tourist trail and perhaps all the better for it... 

Trulli of Alberobello

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Alberobello is famous for its trulli: tiny limestone houses topped by conical roofs. Built without mortar, the houses mostly date from the 14th century, but the building technique has been used since ancient times. You will see them everywhere in this part of Puglia, especially in the Valle d’Itria but Alberobello is quite literally made up of them, there are over 1500. Visit early morning or late in the day to see them without the crowds.
 

A blue door

There is a famous 'blue door' set into the one of the walls in the old town of Ostuni. The striking contrast between the blue of the door and the crisp gleaming white of the walls has made it famous (possibly thanks to many Instagram posts). For more photo opportunities, head to Piazzetta Martiri delle Foibe for a wonderful view over Ostuni and the coastline. 

Gargano Peninsula

For a full day out, explore the Gargano Peninsula. Most Italians tend to flock to the seaside towns of Vieste and Peschici, which are lovely places. But there is also the Foresta Umbra (UNESCO listed) which is home to over 2000 species of plants and trees – a beautiful place to walk and cycle. The town of Monte Sant’Angelo is famous for its Basilica and, surprisingly, for its sourdough loaf!  
 

One for the 'foodies'

Nearby Ceglie Messapica has a name for being a gastronomic destination in this region with many excellent eateries ranging from traditional trattoria to Michelin starred. Whilst in Ceglie, be sure to try the local sweet treat, Biscotto Cegliese. Hand shaped, they are rich and moist and made from ground almonds, cherry jam (often sour cherries) and a touch of lemon zest or cinnamon.

Beach life

The Adriatic coast is rocky but punctuated by sandy beaches, where the water tends to be crystal clear, great for swimming and snorkelling. Choose a private beach club (with sunbeds etc to rent) or a free beach, often picturesquely backed by dunes and Mediterranean maquis.
