Villas for two are always a joy to discover and La Casetta Carina is no exception. This pretty stone cottage, in a valley close to the medieval hill town of Castiglion Fiorentino (7km), is perfectly formed and set in a lush green garden that is one of the largest we have come across for a villa this size.

Beautifully maintained by the proud owners, the garden is a real delight. Enclosed by a deep hedge on one side, there are olive trees, flowers, strategically placed straw topped parasols and, surrounded by the vast expanse of lawn, the all important swimming pool. Alfresco outdoor seating has not been forgotten, with a stone tiled area in the garden for dining and a covered terrace by the cottage, overlooking the brook below and the woodland beyond.  With the backdrop of the tree lined hills, the garden of La Casetta Carina is a lovely place to while away the days.

The stone cottage itself is charming and cute, furnished and decorated in traditional Tuscan style. In the corner of the living room, open tread stairs lead up to the spacious mezzanine bedroom area. The addition of two single beds on this level means La Casetta Carina could appeal to a couple with younger children.

The country road in one direction winds its way up into the hills: stunning views abound and it is an area great for walking and bird watching. In the other direction, it soon reaches Castiglion Fiorentino, a town that retains its authentic character and where a slower pace of life remains. Explore the narrow streets, marvel at the vistas, discover the museums and, of course, enjoy dining on the local dishes in the restaurants.

Great Things to Do Near La Casetta Carina

Giostra del Saracino in Arezzo

People from the town dress up in medieval costumes and parade through the town. It ends with a jousting competition in the beautiful central square, Piazza Grande. Held twice a year on the second to last Saturday in June (evening) and on the first Sunday of September (daytime).

Strada del Vino - Wine Road of Chianti

This world famous wine region is just an hour's drive to the west, with plenty of opportunities to taste and purchase excellent wines. Either go at your own pace stopping where you want to, or ask at any of the tourist offices for information on organised tours. The 'Strada del Vino' is one of the itineraries (you will find that many of the regions have wine road itineraries!).

Go a little further afield

and visit the wonderful historic cities of Siena (1h 15m) or Florence (1h 30m), whose cultural wealth and architectural beauty is world renowned.

Market Day

The local market in Castiglion Fiorentino is held every Friday morning in Piazza Garibaldi, and is a good opportunity not only to find fresh produce and specialities but also to mix with the locals and soak up the atmosphere of Italian village life.

Seek out the books 'Under the Tuscan Sun' and 'Bella Tuscany'

Much of the content of these novels (and film) is set around Cortona. Read them on holiday and visit the places mentioned in the books to let the stories really come alive!  The actual house owned by the author is on the edge of Cortona.

Piazza Grande in Arezzo

The city of Arezzo is about 30 minutes away by car. Its famous residents have included the poet Petrarch and the painter Piero della Francesca. In more recent times, it was the setting for the film 'Life is Beautiful' by Roberto Benigni. The hub of the city is the red-brick Piazza Grande, surrounded by many beautiful buildings. Do not miss the Basilica of San Francesco to see Piero della Francesca's largest and finest work, 'History of the True Cross'.

Enjoy wandering around Castiglion Fiorentino

the nearest town, and it is a real gem!  Behind its walls are narrow streets, a lovely piazza, amazing views, and many hidden delights.  Visit the museum to discover the history of the town and enjoy lunch or dinner in one of the restaurants.

Discover Tuscany’s olive oil

Olive oil is widely used throughout Italy in cooking and as a condiment. Most families with a patch of ground grow their own olives for oil - and if you are visiting, you can buy direct from the grower. This is quite easy, as almost every wine producer also produces olive oil so that oil can be bought at any of the very numerous “Olio”, Vendita Diretta and Degustazione places dotted along the country roads of Tuscany.

Whilst in Cortona, follow the Roman road called Strada Basolata

which starts from the Chiesa del Torreone (at the top of Cortona) and climbs up towards il Monte S.Egigio, following the ridge of the mountain/hill. Fantastic views!
