On arrival at Umbriana, and before you step inside this beautiful stone built villa, we suggest you follow the garden path past the house, open the gate to the pool area and then stop to enjoy the stunning view unfolding before your eyes: a glorious patchwork of fields, vineyards, olive groves, a stone castle or two and rolling hills leading up to the crowning glory that is Todi, the charming medieval town a 15 minute drive away.

This panoramic vista is the backdrop to the pool area, where the inviting pool is framed by lawn and terraces. Further nooks and terraces surround the house, from a shady tree lined garden to the vine covered outdoor dining area to a lovely raised terrace built into the stone ruins at the front. Overlooking the olive grove, it’s a delightful spot for morning coffee. Perfumed shrubs fill the air with scent and flowers add splashes of colour.

Turn your attention to the house and you will discover quintessential Umbrian features such as wood beams, exposed stone walls and terracotta tiled floors. First floor balconies showcase the surrounding views, so typical of the area. A soft colour palette, colourful tiles, comfortable bedrooms and a well appointed kitchen ensure living is easy here.

And should you wish for a change from dining under the vines, head to Todi (9km) for dining in the Piazza del Popolo, the main square in Todi. The town is renowned for its restaurants amidst its narrow streets and squares. The surrounding countryside is also home to a selection of local restaurants or discover one of the many ‘Most Beautiful Villages in Italy’, of which Umbria has many, Monte Castello di Vibio (35min drive) being one of them. As well as exploring this quiet little known corner of Umbria, you are also well placed to visit hilltop town of Orvieto and the neighbouring region of Lazio, home to one of our favourie places, the lakeside town of Bolsena.

Scenic drives in Umbria

The tourist offices can suggest various drives around Umbria based on different themes e.g. art trails, wine. Choose one that appeals and discover Umbria at your own pace.

Explore Todi

Todi was once voted the ‘città ideale’, the most perfect place to live, by a group of American researchers, and it is not hard to see why. Perched overlooking the Tiber valley, it is a charming place where a sense of history is retained; indeed there is Etruscan, Roman and medieval heritage here. Todi is home to two of Umbria’s finest churches and a splendid medieval central square - bustling both daytime and evening. Narrow streets lined with shops, cafés and restaurants lead off the square.

Discover Perugia, the city of art and history

There is plenty to see in Perugia - many superb churches and palazzi, and the Galleria Nazionale Umbria houses one of the great picture collections of central Italy, including works by Perugino and Piero della Francesca. It is lovely simply to wander round and soak up the atmosphere, stopping for refreshment as the whim takes in the many restaurants and cafes!

If you like Jazz....

...go to Perugia in July for its world famous Umbria Jazz Festival. Performers come from all over the world, and concerts take place day and night.

Soak up the views!

Relax around the pool or on one of the terraces with a glass of something chilled and enjoy the panoramic views over rolling green countryside to the hilltop town of Todi.

Day trip to the Eternal City

Rome, a city which needs no introduction, is within reach for a day trip, although a day only really scratches the surface of all there is to see. The many highlights include: The Forum and Palantine Hill, St Peter's Square, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. It is wonderful to just wander around and take in vibrant modern day atmosphere as well as the historical riches, and when your feet inevitably need a rest it is time to stop for homemade gelato!

If you love chocolate...

visit Perugia's Perugina factory, where the famous 'Baci' chocolates are produced. Learn about the history of chocolate, tour the factory and watch it being made.

Spend the morning at the market

The weekly open-air market is part of Italian life. Browse the stalls laden with produce, take in the sights and scents, and mingle with the locals before finishing with a coffee or a bite of lunch. Todi holds its market on a Saturday morning, Marsciano and Montefalco on a Monday morning.

Amelia - possibly one of the most ancient towns in Italy

One of the most ancient Umbrian towns, Amelia is enveloped by impressive polygonal walls dating from the 4th century and, underground, the network of wells built by the Romans can still be visited today. Among the town's cultural offerings are the local archaeological museum and picture gallery which are in the same building in Piazza Vera. The former has some excellent finds whilst the latter makes a morning here well worth the visit. The rest of the sights are predominantly medieval, several striking Palazzi and the heavily reconstructed cathedral which has frescoes by Luigi Fontana.

Spoleto & the Festival 'dei due Mondi'

Spoleto is larger than Todi and has become well known for its 'Festival dei Due Mondi', which translates as 'Festival of the Two Worlds'. For two weeks every July, the town plays centre stage to an eclectic mix of music, theatre, dance, poetry and more. Some events need to be pre-booked, others you can just turn up to.

Roman plumbing at Narni Sotterranea

This underground excavation lies directly under the Church of San Domenico, and was discovered in 1979. You can take a tour lasting one and a half hours in Italian or English that guides you through the local history with a look into Roman plumbing and even an underground Roman church with surviving frescoes.

Activities on and around the Nera river

The Parco Fluviale del Nera is a nature reserve located to the southeast of Terni, and centred around the Nera river. Wildlife abounds in this protected area and there is plenty of opportunity for long walks or mountain bike rides. If you enjoy getting on the water, canoeing and white water rafting are on offer on the Nera, or 'black river'. Feeding into the Nera, the Cascade Marmore are the highest falls in Europe at 165 metres in total. The terrain in this area makes it perfect for rock climbing.

The world's smallest (active) theatre

can be found in Monte Castello di Vibio, a beautiful hilltop town. The Teatro della Concordia can seat an audience of 99 in boxes and stalls. Take a guided tour and discover the history and frescos of this jewel of a theatre.  Explore the rest of the town, taking in the views and perhaps stopping for a bite to eat and a glass of the local wine.
