The charming ‘centro storico’ of Deruta can be seen in all its glory from Villa Monte, its higgledy-piggledy ochre and terracotta toned buildings home to a couple of restaurants and bar. This quintessential Umbrian village is only 850m away, a walk downhill on a country road or a short drive (5 mins).  Villa Monte itself is on a residential hillside, a bright, spacious and welcoming villa, ideal for a multigenerational group, two families or a group of friends.

Open plan living areas accommodate everyone together, the kitchen is modern and well equipped and throughout the ground floor, patio doors and French doors open out onto the terraces. Three of the bedrooms on the first floor have access onto a balcony or sun terrace. Outdoor living is further enhanced by the poolside room, where floor to ceiling sliding doors open onto the pool terrace. Equipped with a shower room, dining area and kitchenette, it will be the place where everyone congregates from morning to evening.

Deruta offers a range of amenities and a further choice of restaurants, downhill from Villa Monte. It is famous for producing colourful, beautiful pottery/earthenware known as maiolica. At Villa Monte, there are two fine examples of this in the form of the dining tables, exquisite designs which showcase the fine work. From Deruta, there is easy access to some of Umbria’s finest places, all within an hour’s drive: Perugia (21km), Assisi (35km), Todi (26km). Smaller villages, such as Torgiano and Bettona, are worth exploring, with the surrounding countryside of fields, olive trees and hills a picturesque backdrop. Lake Trasimeno (45mins) offers water sports, beaches and charming waterside towns.

  • Air Conditioning usage is on a timer (12 hours per day).
  • Parties paying the 6 person rate have use of three bedrooms and bathrooms on the first floor only.
  • Parties paying the 8 person rate have use of all bedrooms and bathrooms on the first floor only.
  • We respectfully request that children do not use the facilities on the second floor without appropriate adult supervision.

Great Things to Do Near Villa Monte

Deruta

Go shopping in Deruta for its famous 'majolica' ceramics - blue, orange and yellow are the predominant colours used - perhaps to reflect the colours of the summer sky and sun.

Enjoy a lazy day by the pool

with the view to Deruta. Relax on one of the terraces with a glass of wine. Catch up on all the books you have been meaning to read for ages.

Follow the signs

to the little hamlet of Canalicchio, not too far from the house. The entire hamlet has been restored and is now a hotel, with a lovely restaurant. Go for dinner and enjoy the views from the restaurants.

Discover Umbria

Pick up one of the many booklets available at the tourist offices. They suggest various drives around Umbria based on different themes e.g. Art Trails, Wine, Life around the Lake. Discover Umbria "the green heart of Italy" at your own pace.

Visit the less well-known towns of Umbria

medieval hill top places that seem untouched by the modern day world. Bettona, Montefalco, Spoleto, Torgiano are all worth a visit.

Experience the 'passeggiata'.

In any town or large village, especially on a weekend or holiday, everyone congregates in the main square early and late evening. They sit and chat with their friends, go for a stroll, sip an aperitif in one of the bars, or stop for an ice-cream. It is the perfect time to people watch!

If you love jazz,

go to Perugia in July for its world famous Umbrian Jazz Festival. Performers come from all over the world, and concerts take place day and night.

Visit the Monte Subasio National Park

Go for a walk that will take you through beautiful countryside teeming with wildlife, flowers and plants. Ask at the tourist office for maps and guides.

Market day

The weekly open-air market is part of Italian life. Stalls laden with produce, scents and smells filling the air, and a crowd of Italians - finish the morning's shopping with a coffee in a bar. Todi holds its market on a Saturday morning, Marsciano and Montefalco on a Monday morning

Try 'porchetta'

pork stuffed with liver, pepper, garlic, salt and wild fennel, then cooked on a spit over a wood fire. Available all over Italy, it is, however, of Umbrian origin!

Assisi

A beautiful pink-hued town which is famous for being the birthplace of St. Francis, the patron saint of Italy, of animals and of peace. The first thing you will see as you approach the town is the huge and imposing Basilica of San Francesco. You will also come across yet more stunning churches and palazzi in the town. Assisi is worth visiting either early in the day or late afternoon.

Lake Trasimeno

Situated on the western edge of Umbria, Lake Trasimeno is Italy's fourth largest lake and its environs are a protected regional park covering 13,200 hectares, including the Oasi la Valle wetlands which are an important habitat for migratory birds. Here you will also find some good waterfront fish restaurants around the lake and eight public beaches.

Discover Perugia

Elegant and infused with history, architecture and art, Perugia is a very well preserved medieval hill town with amazing views from various places as well as being very much a modern city with lots to see and do throughout the year. Corso Vanucci, the main street in the old town, is lined with shops and restaurants and leads to the grand Piazza IV Novembre, which is surrounded by the splendid Palazzo dei Priori and the San Lorenzo Cathedral.

Città della Domenica

This animal and amusement park opened in 1963, and is still a favourite! Occupying 100 acres on a hillside overlooking Perugia, it is a lovely setting for a family day out. There is plenty of parkland to roam, or enjoy the views from the comfort of the little train. There are many animals to see, including kangaroos, ostriches, llamas, donkeys and many birds. In the farm area, children can get hands on and help to milk the cows! There are also themed areas to explore such as Pinocchio’s Village and Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, a Medieval zone, a space shuttle and the Wild West. A programme of activities and shows runs each day. Other attractions include mini-karts, mini-boats, slides, a maze and inflatable play area.
