Imagine being in your own penthouse apartment in the heart of one of Galicia’s historic waterfront cities, just a stone’s throw from the shops, cafes and restaurants of its atmospheric centre, and with a private terrace offering captivating views out to the nearby sea.

This is exactly what we discovered at this unique home, which sits atop a traditional residential building in what is widely regarded as one of the most central and conveniently located postcodes of Vigo. With her inspired vision and flair for interior design, its local owner has converted her one-time family loft into a stylish apartment with a wall of windows that open out onto a private roof terrace. The views from here are rarely found in such a centrally located apartment, encompassing a sweeping panorama across the city’s rooftops to the sheltered waters of the Ría de Vigo.

As dusk falls over the ‘Ría’ the gently rolling hillside that rises above its shoreline on the opposite side is lit up by the twinkling lights of coastal ports and villages to create a captivating backdrop for evenings on the terrace, whilst down below, the city’s atmospheric restaurants, stone-paved streets and café-lined squares are enticingly close to hand.

Whether you opt for the stairs or the lift which provides access from the roof terrace to ground level, an easy stroll downstairs takes you out onto the street where you are just 60m from the market with its colourful stalls of local produce and freshly caught fish. Continue just a few metres further and you will find yourself in a pedestrianised café-lined square from where ancient stone paved streets wind their way past artisan shops downhill to the port. Regular ferries cross the water from here to the charming seaside town of Cangas and also to the Cies Islands where stunning beaches of sweeping white sand are regularly voted as some of the best in the world.  Also close to hand for a day by the sea is Samil, a long sweep of sandy beach that stretches southwest of Vigo, just 6.5km away.
