Alfàbia and Sóller Botanical Gardens

Sóller houses the Balearic Museum of Natural Scienes offering exhibitions related to Mallorca’s zoology, geology and botany, as well as a botanic garden. And on the Sóller to Palma road, just through the tunnel, are the Alfàbia Gardens which are certainly worth a visit (closed on Sunday).

Boat trips

To be able to admire the rugged coastline from the sea, there are boat trips from Sóller to Sa Calobra and also in the south east from Sant Elm to the small nature reserve island of Sa Dragonera.

The romantic home of the Archduke Luis Salvador

Son Marroig, now a museum, was once the home of Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria who loved the Balearic Islands so much, he wrote a famous book about the islands. This can be found on the road between Valldemossa and Deià.

Vineyards and local wine

There are several vineyards worth visiting, the closest ones are in Santa Maria and Esporles. At Bodegues Macia Batle in Santa Maria and the famous Bodegues José L. Ferrer, you can visit and try their wines. No visits during the grape harvest in September although Binissalem does have the wine festival which is worth joining in.

An historic stately mansion

In Esporles you can visit La Granja, a large historical mansion with gardens, fountains, ancient trees and plants, wild and domestic animals, where you can also see a demonstration of ancient handicrafts, tools and machinery and taste the Mallorcan specialities such as jams, cheese, fig cake, sobrassada and moscatel.

Nearby Sóller with its famous train

Spend time discovering the beauties of Sóller and the Port of Sóller - just sitting in the main square watching the world go by, taking the old-fashioned open air tram ride through the orange groves from Port de Sóller to Sóller or the train ride through the mountains from Sóller to Palma.

Simulated Battle of the Moors and Christians...

....This takes place on the 2nd Monday in May. The townsfolk of Sóller dress up to celebrate part of their history and victory over the pirates. A colourful and merry festival that is worth watching.

Discover Deià

Deià is set further along this beautiful coastline heading northwards. This well-known village is neatly set in the hillside with spectacular views out to sea. Famous people have made this their haven including Michael Douglas and Robert Graves. Robert Graves’s house, Ca N’Alluny, which is less than a kilometre from Deià, has been converted into a museum and is open to the public. (Parking can be difficult in Deià.)

Nature Park at Santa Eugènia

The Nature Park at Santa Eugènia is an ideal way to spend a morning with children visiting the small zoo where they also help wounded animals and birds and participate in conserving local fauna which is in danger of extinction.

Scenic drive to the north east

Going further afield in a north-easterly direction, drive through the villages and typical Mallorcan countryside towards Son Serra de Marina, and when you reach the main Ca'n Picafort to Artà road, turn right towards Artà where one of the local trades is basket making. Find a country lane to the Hermitage of Betlem - enjoy the views overlooking Colònia de Sant Pere in the Bay of Alcúdia. Go back along the same lane to Artà and then on to Capdepera to see the castle.

Palma Aquarium

Experience one of the greatest aquariums in the world, discover the secrets of the underwater world from the shallow coral reefs to the mysterious deep blue, be surprised by the richness of the Mediterranean, the dazzling coral reefs and colourful fish that make this subaquatic oasis so spectacular.
