About Tinjan

Truffles

The area is known for its truffles - both black and white varieties grow in the forests around Tinjan. The town hosts an annual truffle festival each autumn, typically in October, celebrating this prized ingredient with local producers and restaurants.

History and Architecture

The old town centre features traditional Istrian stone houses and narrow streets. St Martin's Church dates back to the 15th century and stands in the main square. The architecture reflects the region's Venetian and Austro-Hungarian influences.

Explore

Tinjan serves as a good base for exploring inland Istria. The Mirna River valley runs nearby, popular for cycling routes. The medieval town of Motovun is about 15 kilometres away, whilst the coastal town of Poreč is roughly 20 kilometres to the west.

Cuisine

The surrounding region produces excellent Istrian wines, particularly Malvazija (white) and Teran (red). Local olive oil is also highly regarded. Small family-run restaurants in the area, known as konobas, serve traditional Istrian dishes.
