Skala is ideally placed for access to a number of great beaches such as Skala’s own beach which offers water sports and sun loungers. Slightly further south lies Katelios, which has 2 beaches as well as a small fishing harbour and tavernas. The sandy beach of Mounda Bay sits close by. Further afield at around an hour’s drive is the beautiful beach at Antisamos, made famous by the film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
Cycling around the coastal area of Skala which is fairly flat and makes for some interesting exploration. Mountain bike hire is available in Skala. For water sports fans, jet skis and boats are available to hire at Skala beach.
Why not try one of the island’s wineries? Less than 20 minutes’ drive from Skala is the Metataxas Winery at Mavrata, which is open for visits on weekends.
The village is home to ruins of a Roman villa with good displays of mosaic flooring. Discovered in 1956, the villa was built in the 2nd Century AD and whilst it is only a small site, it is well worth a visit to see the beautiful mosaics.
