Beaches
The town serves as a gateway to stunning beaches. Kastro Beach is only a 3 minute drive or a 15 minute walk from Lefkada Town, along the causeway back towards the airport. It’s a very long, sandy and peaceful beach.
In the opposite direction Paralia Agios Ioannis beach is popular with kite surfers and offers beautiful sunsets. It’s a long stretch of beach and is only really busy at the height of summer (and then at times there are still sun beds available). It’s family friendly with easy and plentiful parking and a few low key tavernas. Towards the north around the windmills the beach becomes more wild and natural.
Pefkoulia Beach is a 17 minute drive from Lefkada Town. It’s one of the most accessible beaches by car with free parking. It’s a sandy and stoney beach with turquoise blue waters. On your way to Pefkoulia, from Lefkada Town, you can get fantastic views along to Agios Nikitas.
Sights and museums
Lefkada Town is a cultural hub, with plenty of attractions and places of interest. Its most iconic building is the Agia Maura fortress strategically positioned on the causeway. Originally built in the 14th century to protect access to the island, it became a walled city for some time; in the later centuries it was enlarged and changed hands several times, which visitors can learn about firsthand.
The town’s many churches were mostly built during the period of Venetian rule, and often contain wonderful ‘iconostases’, walls of intricately carved icons and religious images. Agios Spyridon in the main square is perhaps the most well-known church, with a beautiful bell tower.
To delve deeper into local history, head to the Archaeological Museum, which has a huge range of objects and artworks, or the Orpheus Folklore Museum, which focusses on more recent Lefkadian daily life and customs. There is also the unusual Museum of Phonographs, featuring old gramophones, records and musical instruments.
Eating out
The town centre has a captivating character and lively dining options, particularly in the bustling main square and along the waterfront. Cultural events and festivals also take place here, including an international festival of traditional music and drama held around the last week of August.
Stunning sunsets can be enjoyed over a drink at one of the many waterside bars and restaurants. The restaurants offer a range of different food options, from simple, traditional Greek food to more elaborate dishes, based on traditional methods.
Water sports
Kayak and SUP rentals are available in Lefkada Town with further water sport opportunities at Nydri. These include boat hire, water skiing, paragliding, pedalos and jet-skiing to name a few. Children (and adults!) will enjoy splashing around at the Water FunPark Lygia, only a 10 minute drive from Lefkada Town.
