The beach
Stoupa Beach is the heart of the village, a wide and inviting stretch of golden sand that curves gently along the edge of the Messinian Gulf. Framed by a low promenade lined with cafes, tavernas, and shops, this beach offers a perfect balance of convenience and natural beauty. The sand is fine and soft, and the waters are calm, shallow, and exceptionally clear, making it an ideal setting for families with children or those looking for a gentle swim.
Nearby
Nearby, just a 15-minute drive north of Stoupa, and well worth visiting, lies the beautifully preserved village of Kardamyli, one of the oldest settlements in the Mani region and a place that effortlessly blends natural beauty, cultural heritage, and sophistication. The village’s stone houses, cypress trees, and cobbled paths create an atmosphere that feels both timeless and peaceful. Kardamyli is known for its historical architecture, especially in the old town, where you can explore a cluster of 18th-century fortified tower houses, Byzantine churches, and the restored Mourtzinos tower complex. Down by the waterfront, the newer part of the village offers charming cafes and tavernas overlooking a rocky shoreline and hidden coves with pebbled beaches.
Agios Nikolaos
A short drive south of Stoupa brings you to the charming fishing village of Agios Nikolaos, a place where traditional Maniot life continues at a gentle, unhurried pace. Nestled around a small, picturesque harbour dotted with colourful fishing boats, the village exudes authenticity and tranquillity. Stone-built houses line the narrow streets, and along the seafront you’ll find a handful of family-run tavernas serving fresh fish, caught daily and grilled simply with local olive oil and herbs. The atmosphere here is peaceful, especially in the early morning and late afternoon when the light softens and the sea glows with the fading sun. While the village itself is small, its surrounding area offers several lovely pebbled beaches and coves with crystal-clear water, perfect for swimming or snorkelling.
