Beaches

Afife and the surrounding coastline is home to some of the most spectacular beaches to be found in this region of northern Portugal. With Afife beach itself just 20 minutes’ walk from the village centre, you will be forgiven for not venturing far. A 10-minute drive up the coast will bring you to Vila Praia de Ancora, regularly named as one of Portugal’s top beaches and with Moledo and Caminha nearby too, you are quite spoilt for choice. The choice of amenities at this areas beaches ranges, with some having a choice of beach bars and restaurants on offer serving tasty traditional dishes, whilst others are perfect for taking a picnic to enjoy.

Shopping

A little supermarket can be found in the village where basic provisions can be bought every day. In the nearby towns of Vila Praia de Ancora and Viana do Castelo, large, well-stocked supermarkets offer a wide range of items. Fish, meat and cheeses from the area can be brought over the counter and an extensive selection of wines are on offer. There are also locally run grocery shops in the towns and shopping in these is a great way to mingle with the locals and buy locally grown fruit and veg and fresh bread.

Eating Out

A visit to the nearby town of Vila Praia de Ancora is a must for fans of seafood. The small yet functional harbour provides the towns restaurants with the days catch brought in by the locals who fish the waters in the area. From some of the restaurants you could be lucky enough to see the boats coming in and the fish being unloaded.

A number of restaurants can be found in nearby Viana do Castelo as well, serving a wide range of different dishes, from traditional Portuguese cuisine to Italian pizzas and other European dishes.

Water sports

From surfing in Afife, kayaking in Esposende or taking the ferry from Caminha to Galicia in Spain, if you are looking for things to do on the water, then Afife is an excellent base as the surrounding beaches and towns have so much to offer. You will find kite surfing and stand up paddle boarding as well as excursions on guided boat tours along the river to watch the wildlife along the banks, or simply admire the sunset from a beachside bar in Moledo.
