Introduction
Arcos is well-known for being one of the prettiest pueblos blancos in Andalucía. It’s precarious position on top of a cliff makes it stunningly unique. The old town contains a mixture of Moorish and medieval architecture, impressive basilicas, señorial houses and plant-filled patios.
There are over 6 wine bodegas open to the public in and around the Arcos area. The red wine produced here is the most popular in the Cádiz province, they also produce a dry white.
El Lago de Santiscal
The artificial lake at El Santiscal offers all the facilities of a seaside resort and is only 5-minute drive from the historic town. There is a sandy beach with a safe area for bathers, sun umbrellas, a picnic area, a beach bar and water sports. The activities on offer at the lake include water skiing, pedalo hire, kayaks, sailing, rowing and inflatable water slides. There are also 2 bird observatories at El Santiscal as it is a popular spot for migrating birds.
Flamenco bars
The narrow cobbles streets in the old town are home to traditional and modern tapas bars and restaurants as well as flamenco tabernas. Several bars are located within the old city walls or caves, keeping them cool in summer months and providing the perfect acoustic for an impromptu performance.
Food markets
There are various municipal food markets in Arcos, both in the new and old part of town. This is where the locals purchase fresh meat, in particular game and pork, fish, pulses and vegetables such as the locally grown asparagus
