Explore the area
Órgiva is the perfect base to start your hike or cycle ride, or for something more sedate, a gentle stroll through the olive, lemon and orange groves. Maps are available from the local tourist office or hiking shop. There are various places from where you can rent road and mountain bikes for a whole week or just for the day. It is possible to catch the bus into Granada centre, the historic city brimming with cultural sites, museums, shops, tapas bars and of course the Alhambra.
The nearby spa town of Lanjarón is just 10km from Órgiva; here you can enjoy the benefits of its natural mineral springs and a therapeutic treatment.
Local Markets
The Thursday market, starting early and packing up around 2pm, is an atmospheric experience. Stall holders sell brightly coloured fruit, vegetables, herbs and olives. It is a great opportunity to purchase locally sourced and seasonal produce, picked straight from the ground/tree and sold directly to the public just hours later. You can also purchase the local lavender infused honey, spices, clothes, shoes and kitchenware.
Nearby Beaches
The beaches of the Costa Tropical are approximately a 30-minute drive from the Alpujarra. Along this coast you can find sheltered bays, ideal for families with young children or those wanting to go snorkelling. Or if you are willing to seek them out, sparsely populated coves with crystal clear waters.
Attractions for the children
There is a waterpark just along from the beach at Almuñecar and another on the outskirts of Granada. Also in Almuñecar, you will find the Lori Sexi Park, a sanctuary/zoo for parrots, parakeets and lemurs amongst other exotic species. Or in the opposite direction, you have the Oasys Mini Hollywood. This Western inspired theme park, complete with zoo, aquatic zone and cactus garden, is located within the only desert in Europe.
