If you can tear yourself away from your private pool, there are plenty of beaches to choose from within a short drive of Vejer. El Palmar has over 4km of golden sand backed with dunes. Here you will find a wide choice of formal and informal restaurants, surf schools and night markets. A little further south, Zahora is a sandy bay with beach bars and views towards Cape Trafalgar. This beach at low tide is great for rock pooling and shallow waters are ideal for families with young children. Around the headland, Los Caños de Meca has a hippy chic vibe, beach bars and views across to Morocco.

Shopping and markets

There are several boutique-type shops in Vejer selling jewellery, clothes, chic beachwear and leather bags and shoes. There are also shops selling locally crafted wicker baskets, wrought iron goods and ceramics. There is a fresh food market each morning as well as a flea market every Thursday in the new part of town.

Eating out

Vejer has become a gourmet hub in recent years. There are plenty of traditional tapas establishments, quirky wine bars, a gourmet food market, as well as Spanish, Moroccan and Italian restaurants. There are numerous ice-cream parlours and plenty of outdoor terraces on which to enjoy a relaxing drink before or after dinner. Being close to the coast, there is plenty of choice to sample fish and seafood, not to mention the local catch; blue fin tuna, which you will see on every menu around town. The local Retinto cattle produce a great steak. All these delicacies can be accompanied with a local glass of Cádiz red wine, a chilled sherry from Jerez or even the locally brewed beer, Besaro.
