About Hio

Surrounding Area

Hio is located on the headland which separates the estuaries of Pontevedra and Vigo meaning the whole area is dotted with beautiful sandy beaches, stunning clifftop views out to sea and of the Cies Islands and seaside villages and towns with a number of quaint beach bars and restaurants to enjoy.

Pintens village, and beach of the same name, are close by and the pretty beach and friendly village atmosphere are equally enjoyable. In the summer months a traditional beach bar, 'chiringuito', opens offering food and drinks and occasionally live entertainment in the evenings.

Shopping

In Hio itself, locally run grocery shops and mini markets are perfect for daily supplies like fresh bread or bottled water. Fresh fruit and vegetables from the area can also be found in these smaller shops and locally made wines are also sold.

For larger supermarkets and shops, the neighbouring town of Cangas offers a number of options. Some have fresh fish and meat counters where you can buy locally sourced produce to take home and cook on the barbecue.

Beaches & The Cies Islands

A number of beaches in the area surrounding Hio have been awarded the Blue Flag for excellence, including Rodas Beach on The Cies Islands which was once voted the best beach in the world.

The Cies Islands can be reached by ferry from the port in Cangas, Vigo or Baiona and the number of visitors per day is limited to protect the island's environment. As well as the stunning Rodas beach, there are hiking trails to discover, flora and fauna to spot and a restuarant serving local cuisine.
