This beautifully restored property, overlooking the River Dordogne and close to the historic town of Bergerac (22km), dates back to 1790. For over a century it remained in the same family and since then its habitants have included (so the rumour goes) a spy and goats! Thankfully the current owners, who fell in love with the property on sight, spent a number of years carefully restoring it and have successfully combined tradition and contemporary to great effect, to create the perfect place for relaxed holiday living in a fabulous setting.

From the moment you enter the double height entrance hall, you cannot fail to be impressed: elegant yet informal living spaces, a stylish, modern kitchen to please any foodie, traditional French doors that open out on to the terrace and garden. Equally enticing, the bedrooms are beautifully decorated, each one unique (in fact, you will be hard pressed to pick a favourite!). The antique silk wall coverings remain, a backdrop to sumptuous comfortable beds, gorgeous fabrics and contemporary bathrooms (all bedrooms are en suite).

As the interior of Le Manoir has been designed to perfectly accommodate groups (friends, a multigenerational family or a few families holidaying together, so too has the exterior. The spacious garden is home to mature trees, fruit trees, lavender, lawns and dining terraces, offering plenty of spots to sit in the sun or in shade. Flanked by comfortable sun loungers, the private pool sits to one side of the manoir, nestled against the garden wall. And just by the rose covered pigeonnier, a door opens in the wall to reveal a hidden garden and a couple of entertainment spaces – a bar area to hang out in, a pool/snooker barn and table tennis.

The cottage is to be found in the hidden garden, a charming retreat complete with a vine covered terrace which runs the length of the building. With two bedrooms, a kitchen and lovely living area, it is ideal for those in the group seeking some independence.

There is so much to do at Le Manoir, you will be forgiven for spending most of your holiday there, especially as the nearest boulangerie, shop and restaurant are close by in Le Fleix (2km), with a further choice in Ste Foy la Grande (4km). But to do so would be to miss out on the surrounding area. With the Dordogne river just over the road, there are plenty of places to canoe, kayak, swim and enjoy a ‘gabarre’ boat trip. Bergerac itself is a delight to explore, its half timbered buildings home to shops and restaurants. Wine lovers must make a trip to St Emilion (36km), UNESCO listed and home to some of the best wines in the world. And finally, the glorious city of Bordeaux is only an hour away by train from Ste Foy la Grande.

  • In the main house, the day bed in the living room of the first floor bedroom suite will be prepared and additional folding beds (for children) will be provided.  Please see the accommodation breakdown above for details.

Great Things to Do Near Château de la Rivière 22

Canoeing and kayaking

This can be done nearby at Ste Foy la Grande, or further east around the very well-known and incredibly scenic section of the Dordogne around La Roque Gageac, Beynac and Domne. Paddle downstream and get brought back to your starting point by minibus.

Cruise on the Dordogne

Take a cruise along the Dordogne on a ‘gabarre’, a traditional flat-bottomed boat, to see Bergerac from a different perspective.

La Plage des Bardoulets

In July and August, head to Ste Foy la Grande and the Plage des Bardoulets.  This riverside beach area has slides, swings, beach-volley ball, a picnic area under the trees, and sandy beach area with river swimming.

Do not miss the famous wine town of Saint-Emilion

It is the first wine growing area listed by UNESCO so it is definitely worth a visit. There is also a huge monolithic church carved out of limestone rock, as well as miles of underground tunnels and caves.

Bordeaux

This bustling metropolitan city has plenty to see and do, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site with some wonderful architecture and impressive squares, several excellent museums, great shopping and gastronomy - and wine of course! Visit ‘La Cité du Vin’ for detailed information about wine routes in the area and to book tastings.

The coast

It is about a two hour drive to the 19th century seaside resorts of Arcachon or Lacanau, where you will have the choice of the ocean beaches, where the Atlantic rollers are great for surf sports, or the more sheltered beaches of the lakes and lagoons set just inland, or thirdly the tidal beaches of the Bay of Arcachon.

Visit Beynac and Sarlat

The architecture of these medieval towns is fascinating. Climb through the village at Beynac to the castle and church perched high on the cliff then enjoy the Menu du jour beside the river. In Sarlat, wander the narrow streets of the old town and visit the cathedral.

The famous golf course of Château des Vigiers (18 hole)

is not too far away, about 12km. Keen golfers can tackle the some or all of the 27 holes, whilst others may prefer the on-site spa, and afterwards all can enjoy a gastronomic meal at the restaurant or a simpler bite in the brasserie.

A trip to Bergerac is a must

The old centre is a beautiful jumble of cobbled streets, timbered houses, little shops and cafés overlooking the squares. Sit on the riverbank and watch the boats go by.

Market Day

Spend the morning at one of the fabulous markets in area - Ste Foy la Grande (one of the largest in the area) on a Saturday, Bergerac on a Wednesday and a Saturday, Issigeac on the Sunday or Eymet on Thursdays - and see how the French shop for food. Every market has stalls teeming with produce - the best way to shop for lunch!

Château de Montaigne

This château-mansion, in the small village of Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne in the Dordogne département, was the home of the famous Renaissance philosopher and thinker Michel de Montaigne.

Medieval bastide towns

Nearby Sainte-Foy-la-Grande is a bastide, and others in striking distance of the property and well worth a visit are Pellegrue, Duras, Monségur, Sauveterre-de-Guyenne and Libourne. Typical features are a grid pattern of streets circling a central square, arched arcades and a covered marketplace, and encircling walls with gateways.

Activities for teens

Bergerac can offer go-karting, ten-pin bowling and mini-golf to keep older children and young adults entertained.

Battle re-enactment at Castillon-la-Bataille

Over several weekends in July and August, the town of Castillon-la-Bataille attracts visitors for its annual festival, recreating a medieval village with demonstrations, games for children, crafts, and food and local wines. In the evening, there is a spectacular re-enactment of the Battle of Castillon, which took place on 17th July 1453 and ended the Hundred Years War. Hundreds of volunteers in costume present a comprehensive retelling of the dramatic battle the town is named after.
