Local food and wine can be enjoyed alfresco in the charming courtyard terraces at La Maison d’Odelou. The covered terrace leads onto both the open grounds and garden, and to the pool area which enjoys views across the woodlands. The interior is as delightful, with stone walls and travertine flooring forming a warm hued backdrop to the spacious rooms. Colour comes from the vibrant wallpaper in the living room, a red painted wall in the kitchen and the stunning handpainted (by the owner) murals in the bedrooms. Each bedroom has its own individual design - the aeroplanes from bygone times are in homage to the owner’s grandfather, who flew with the famous French writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Great Things to Do Near La Maison d'Odelou

Medieval Festival in Lauzerte last weekend in August

Minstrels, knights, craftsmen, medieval food and drinks, battles, music, juggling, strolling, street theatre, fire show and concerts come together for a fun filled weekend at the end of August in Lauzerte. Lauzerte itself is a wonderful town to explore at any time during the summer. It is classed as 'one of the most beautiful villages in France' and with its streets lined with limestone white buildings it is easy to see why.

From hilltop village to stunning caves

Just over an hour's drive, passing Cahors, will take you to St Cirq Lapopie, a village with the accolade of 'Un des Plus Beaux Villages de France'. A very impressive place with a view to match. Best visited late afternoon or early evening when the tour buses have left. At the foot of the village you can visit the cave of Pech Merle with its superb prehistoric art.

Fun for kids and big kids!

CapNature near Cahors is a outdoor activity park with treetrop adventure courses, paintball, zorb/bubble football, laser-tag, climbing and kayaking.

Gastronomie

There are many restaurants in this area, particularly in Montcuq, Puy l'Evêque and other villages along the river. Some have vegetarian options.

Hire a bicycle

Hire bikes in nearby Puy l'Evêque (18km) and explore the country lanes, or join part of the 'Lot Valley' marked bicycle route which follows the River Lot for 160km altogether between Cahors and Damazan, where the Lot flows into the Garonne.

Messing about on the river

In Puy l'Evêque (18km), you can enjoy active pursuits such as canoeing, rafting or hiring a pedalo on the River Lot.

If you like live music

you might like to try the Blues Festival in Cahors mid July, the Saint-Céré Music and Theatre Festival from mid July to mid August, or the Bonaguil Music and Theatre Festival in the chateau, first week of August.

Cahors

The main town of the Lot, Cahors was founded during the first century BC around a sacred spring. Built in a tight meander of the River Lot, it is compact and walkable. Sights include the lovely Cathédrale de St Etienne, a Romanesque-style cathedral, and the famous Pont Valentre, a fortified bridge with six pointed arches and three tall towers. The Musée Henri Martin is also worth visiting, housed in a 17th century former Episcopal palace. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, a wonderful open air market fills the Place Chapou whilst a flower market takes place on Sunday mornings. A daily market is held in the 19th century halle.

Hilltop village of Castelnau-Montratier

Castelnau-Montratier is typical of the Quercy Blanc region, with its white stone houses. Its church is very distinctive, inspired by neo-Byzantine basilicas, and has a dome which is similar in style to that of the Sacre-Coeur in Montmartre, albeit on a slightly smaller scale.

Explore Puy l’Evêque

This superb medieval town built on a rock by the river Lot is well worth a visit, with its 13th century donjon at the top of the town. Tuesday is market day in Puy l’Evêque, held in the square in front of the town hall.

Markets

Some excellent local markets can be found in this area, such as in Prayssac on Friday morning, Puy l'Evêque on a Tuesday, Monsempron-Libos on a Thursday or Cahors and Luzech on a Wednesday. You will find all the best vegetables, fish, meat, cheese, honey, wine, dairy and so much more.

Wine tasting

Book a tasting (dégustation) at 1 or 2 wine 'domaines' in the local area, whose vineyards provide the Malbec grapes for the famous Cahors wines.

The Secret Gardens of Cahors

The secret gardens were first created in 2002 and consist of 29 separate gardens around the city, each with a different theme. Spend half a day following the trail linking the gardens.

Waterpark at Montcuq

Kids (and big kids) can head to Aquazone Montcuq, to clamber over and jump off big inflatable obstacles floating in the lake!

The village of Montcuq

Montcuq is only a 10 minute drive away and is a lovely bastide town with pretty much everything you need.  It has the essentials (supermarket, bakery, butcher) as well as interesting boutiques to discover, including a lovely salon de thé-cum-bookshop, which hosts concerts in the garden.  And of course, there are cafes and restaurants and finally, the weekly market is held on Sundays.

The Little Montcuquois

Head to Rue du Petit Rapporteur in Montcuq and see if you can spot the 'The Little Montcuquois', a wooden carving standing 94cm tall.  This little character bears the symbols of Montcuq: the village's coat of arms on his shoulder, a pilgrim's staff (on the way to Compostela) and a palm leaf.  A local sculptor donated it to the village and it is said that caressing its backside brings good luck!
