Standing proudly atop a hill, this impressive castle can be seen from the terrace at Le Brame.

Families with children will enjoy the outdoor facilities at Le Brame, which include table tennis, table football, a pétanque area and children’s swings and slide. Surrounding the pool is a large terrace, alongside a covered dining terrace. The villa itself sits adjacent to this area. Villeréal is the closest town for essential amenities and restaurants. At its centre is a beautiful 14th Century market hall where a weekly food market (Saturday) takes place in between the huge oak posts. It is also the setting for Monday evening markets during the summer and a brocante fair every second Sunday. Whatever market you visit (both in Villeréal and surrounding local towns), they are always an enjoyable experience: an opportunity to see local life and try the food of the region. One of the ‘must try’ delicacies is the honey produced by the owner of Le Brame, who is a renowned beekeeper in the area.

Great Things to Do Near Le Brame

The Châteaux of the Dordogne

You can spend a day touring the Châteaux of the Dordogne (approx 45-60 mins drive to the north). Beynac, Castelnaud and its war museum, and Marqueyssac with its famous box hedge garden can all be visited. Why not also have a wander around the picturesque town of Sarlat in the same area?

Take the children to the Parc-en-Ciel

in Lacapelle-Biron (8km) - 14 hectares of trees and fields where you will find mini golf, a farm of baby animals, a snail museum, and an adventure playground through the trees with different courses depending on the age of the children.

Two chateaux nearby

The Chateau de Biron (8km), which can be seen from the terrace at Le Brame, and the Chateau de Bonaguil (25km) are good examples of architecture from the 12th to the 19th centuries. Both are open to the public and hold events during the summer months.

Magical twilight walks

At Saint-Eutrope-de-Born, near Villeréal, you are invited to take a magical walk at nightfall every Wednesday and Thursday (and themed Fridays: enquire), in July and August. Young and old alike will enjoy a poetic journey through an environment where the work of nature and the fruits of chance are given free rein. Forgotten wood, driftwood and natural sculptures await discovery at the twists and turns of the path. Go at your own pace and immerse yourself in the poetry and magic of this walk which is accessible to all.

Tour the bastide towns in the area

A very enjoyable day can be spent hopping between these fortified villages, stopping now and then for refreshments and to soak up the ambiance. They are all based on the same layout of a main square, often arcaded, with streets leading off it, but each has their own character! They include Castillonès, Villeréal, Monpazier, and in Monflanquin there is the Bastide Museum to learn more.

Ceramist Bernard Palissy museum

In the very picturesque tiny stone village of Saint-Avit, between Gavaudun and Lacapelle-Biron, the Bernard Palissy Museum hosts an exhibition and sale of contemporary ceramics each year, where we discover the work of great ceramists of our time. A permanent space is dedicated to the life and work of Bernard Palissy.

Wander the 'brocante' markets

which take place once a month between April to September in Monflanquin, as well as an antique market on the 14th July. The village of Issigeac, to the norrth-west, holds an antique market at the beginning of August and there are flea markets most weekends in the area. See if you can pick up a bargain!

Villeréal holds a great antique/brocante market every second Sunday of the month.  Head there in the morning for a stroll around the stalls to see what you can discover, followed by lunch at one of the restaurants in the square.

Visit the vineyards around Puy-l'Évêque

Around Puy-l'Évêque (37km) you can sample and buy Cahors wine. You will see many 'caves' offering the chance to taste - look out for the sign 'dégustation'. Don't forget to stop in the little villages en route, dotted along the River Lot, heading for Cahors itself (75km).

A boat trip on the river Lot,

starting in Fumel (22km) is a lovely way to while away a couple of hours.

Riding, archery and tennis nearby

There are two horse riding clubs near Monflanquin, as well as an archery club and 4 tennis courts - plenty of scope for things to do!

Golfers ...

will find an 18 hole course at Castelnau-de-Gratecambe near Villeneuve-sur-Lot, just 25km from the house. Or they may like to make the longer journey to the famous Chateau des Vigiers course at Monestier (60km) which also has spa facilities for those who are less interested in teeing off!

Boat and horse-drawn coach trips

About 25 minutes away, in the village of Mazeyrolles, there is a company which organises trips on horse drawn carriages. Take a leisurely 'drive' through the countryside, stop for a picnic in the woods or indulge in a wine and foie gras tasting. They also organise boat trips on the Dordogne river, followed by lunch and an afternoon coach and horses ride - magnifique!
