It would be hard to find a more enviable location along this scenic stretch of Kefalonian coastline. Alegria is a beautifully appointed property boasting wonderful uninterrupted sea views.

The property is comfortably furnished and thoughtfully laid out. On the ground floor you will find the well-equipped kitchen and an open-plan living space with doors framing the wonderful views across the sun drenched terraces. On this level there is also bedroom with en suite shower and doors which conveniently lead directly out to the terrace, ideal for those early risers seeking an early morning swim. There are two further bedrooms on the first floor, both en suite and both with access to private balconies with views.

Outside, the pool terrace and in-built seating area provide the perfect setting for unhurried afternoons and evenings with family and friends. The immaculate garden and lawn area has palm tress to provide natural shade from the Mediterranean sun.

Located within the Minies area, just a few minutes from the airport, there are three local beaches close by. At Minies (1.3km), the water is calm and shallow, making it an ideal choice for both couples seeking a swim and families with younger children. To the south lies Ammes Beach (2.1km), its gentle crescent of sand with turquoise water being a popular choice with the locals. Spasmata Beach (2.6km) is perfect for those seeking a more natural setting; framed by low cliffs and with coarse golden sand, it offers ideal conditions for both swimming and snorkelling. Slightly further afield is the Blue Flag Beach of Ai Helis (4.2km), always a family favourite.

This corner of the island is well suited to exploration. Within a 20 minute drive you can reach Argostoli with its waterfront cafés and shaded squares. The local vineyards Sarris (6km) and Gentilini (4.6km) are also worth visiting, enjoy a guided tour and pick up a bottle or two to enjoy back at the villa. The village of Svoronata, where the pace is distinctly unhurried, can be found within a 10 minute drive. Here you will find a handful of tavernas and mini-markets.

  • Please note: due to the waterfront location of Alegria there is direct access (via a gate) to the sea. Children must be supervised at all times.

Great Things to Do Near Alegria

Olives, ouzo and octopus - try them all?!

Treat yourself to a typical Meze – a series of tiny dishes that accompany the aniseed based liquor, you can try an Ouzerie, that is similar to a Spanish Tapas bar – a great way to spend a lazy afternoon.

Argostoli back streets - explore a little...

For retail therapy, the pedestrian Lithostrato offers a wonderful selection of shops offering everything from local produce to stylish leather shoes. There are plenty of local cafes for refreshments and the Orthodox church of St. Spiridon and the Catholic church always have their doors open. Go on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday in the evenings when all the shops are open.

Wine lovers - rejoice!

Kefalonia has many excellent wineries, all of which are delighted to offer tours and tastings. The closest to the villa are Sarris and Gentilini.

Pie in the sky

The Greeks love their pies, and the Kefalonians have taken it one step further in producing this nourishing dish. Everyone has their own recipe, but it is usually flaky filo pastry stuffed with minced pork & rice along with the secret recipe of spices and sauce - delicious.

Turtle rescue fund

The Kefalonia locals are extremely proud of the fact that the 'Caretta Caretta' turtles continue to use the unspoilt beaches in the south of the island to nest their eggs. As one would hope and expect, beaches such as Mounda Bay are protected and supervised to ensure that the eggs are not disturbed by the invasion of sun umbrellas and beach barbecues that can often be found on such stunningly beautiful beaches.

Explore Lefkada - the island next door

Lefkatha means white and the island's name of Lefkada reflects the towering white cliffs and beaches on the western shores of this green and unspoilt island. Sailing from Fiscardo to Vassiliki, plenty of windsurfers consider this bay serious windsurfing territory. Apart from watching the colourful sails as they strut their stuff, exploring the rest of the island is a delight. Sivota, Nidri, Geni and Lefkada Town offer a wonderful variety of beaches, villages and towns to explore

Zax - a - ro- pla - stio ( pastry shop in other words!)

Visit any Zaxaroplastio for a sweet pastry. This complicated word denotes popular pastry shops that have a large array of tiny, sticky, confections, using filo pastry, nuts, honey, figs and raisins, some cakes ooze chocolate - naughty but nice!

Drogorati caves

Although they have deservedly become a serious attraction on the Island, it’s never so busy that you have to spend much time waiting to see them. We recommend that you try to arrive there either early(ish) morning or late afternoon, so as to be sure to avoid any bus party that may be visiting the caves as part of their Island tour. The Stalagmites and Stalactites are well worth the effort of driving here.

Island hop to Zakynthos

Another island, not so far away from Kefalonia, but it could be at the other end of the world, such is the contrast between these beautiful islands. Take the daily ferry over from the port of Pessada for the 90 minute crossing to Skinari, in the north of Zakynthos, and from there you could take another boat trip to the amazing Shipwreck Beach, or go for a sightseeing tour before catching the evening ferry back.

Spook yourself out at the Mazarakata tombs

Between the villages of Lakythra and Metaxata visit the eerie Mazarakata tombs and wander among the ancient graves where wildflowers bloom in colourful abundance. Excavated mainly by Kefalonian archaeologist Panayotis Kavvadias in 1908, the burial chambers had been filled with decorative clay pots, tiles, glassware and gold plates, which are now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli. Today all that remains are the tombs themselves, where you can clamber and explore as you choose. It's a remarkably tranquil area, and the ideal place to spend a few hours with a sketchpad imagining the ancient civilisation that created it.
