Picture relaxing by (or in) the pool at Villa Bianca Carmela, taking in the views across the olive groves towards the Salento coastline, a mere 1.4km away. This smart, crisp white villa enjoys a great location for a seaside holiday, whether you are drinking in the vistas from the pool terrace or heading out to spend the day on the coast, where you will discover tiny rocky coves, sandy beaches and the sparkling waters of the Ionian Sea.

White walls form a courtyard in which you will find the villa, a spacious dining terrace with dappled shade, and on the upper level the pool area. Blue and white are the colours of choice, a simple yet effective theme. Inside, the patterned tiled floor is an eye catching backdrop for the pure white furniture, whilst outside, the sand coloured paved terraces are edged with Mediterranean plants.

Marked by its tower standing guard, seafront Torre Suda (3km) is the nearest spot for amenities (mini market, restaurants etc) with smaller Capilungo (3 km due south) offering similar.  And if you fancy a change from the beaches, why not explore the walled town of Gallipoli (a 25 minute drive) to see why its name means ‘beautiful city’ in Greek?  Or spend the day in the capital of Puglia, Lecce (1hr drive): here Roman ruins sit alongside Baroque palazzi and bars and cafes spill out onto the limestone paved streets, tempting you to sit awhile and soak up the atmosphere.

Great Things to Do Near Villa Bianca Carmela

Beach days

When you are ready to hit the beach, there are many to choose from in this stretch of coastline. One of the most alluring is Punta della Suina, near Gallipoli, with its Caribbean-esque turquoise waters, and backdrop of dunes and natural vegetation.

Florence of the South

Otherwise known as Lecce, the capital of Puglia. It is a city that fully embraced the Baroque style of architecture.  Much remains today making Lecce a wonderful city to walk around. Visit the Basilica di Santa Croce and see if you can spot, on its ornate façade, griffins, dodos, angels and sheep…

Go snorkelling

The unbelievably clear waters of the Salento coastline are perfect for snorkellers, so take your gear down to the sea and see what you can see!

Local delicacies await

A simple local favourite is Pittule, fried dough balls which are often made for festive occasions. Another street food, Pucce are soft rolls made with semolina flour bread rolls and baked in wood ovens. They can have various fillings such as olives, tomatoes and ricotta. And Pitta di Patate is a cheese-topped potato pie with a tasty filling of tomatoes, onions, capers, black olives, and anchovies.

Take a boat trip

to explore the rugged coastline and captivating caves of the Salento peninsula at the very bottom of the 'heel' of the 'boot' of Italy.

The island town of Gallipoli

makes for a lovely day out just wandering its picturesque cobbled streets, soaking up the history and pausing for refreshment. Youngsters may enjoy riding the little tourist train whilst deciding which gelato flavours to ask for!

Try a water sport

Surf sports and sailing are popular here, and some companies offer kayak and SUP hire. There are also dive schools offering full PADI courses down to beginner level snorkelling tours.

Ugento

Small but perfectly formed, Ugento is worth a visit for its archaeological heritage, including Baroque churches, an archaeological museum, and Messapian remains (the Messapians were a tribe who inhabited this region in classical antiquity).

A coastal hike

Don your walking shoes for a breathtaking walk along the cliffs on the east coast of the Salento peninsula. Just north of Santa Maria di Leuca, the 'Sentiero delle Cipolliane' route is 2.5km, or 5km including the return, and features caves, traditional stone dwellings and a stunning natural setting.

Day trip to Otranto

One of the larger towns in the area, Otranto is culturally rich, with its 15th century Aragonese Castle and an 11th-century Cathedral famous for its unusual mosaic floors. Wander its seafront, wide squares and back streets filled with boutiques and restaurants. The Punta Palascìa Lighthouse just south of the town marks the most easterly point of mainland Italy.

Enjoy the sunset

whilst savouring a cocktail or some excellent fresh seafood from the seafront at Gallipoli.

Torre Suda

Torre Suda is your nearest village on the coast, with a selection of cafes, minimarkets, pizzerias and restaurants, and of course the essential 'gelateria'.  The shoreline here is mainly rocky and is interspersed with coves and little beaches. The nearest town inland is called Racale - unassuming but with a lovely town centre and piazza, and with some lovely churches.  A place to take in the atmosphere of daily life in the area.
