An imaginative restoration of what was once a typical village farmhouse has produced this charming contemporary home which sits within spacious walled grounds and boasts a host of enticing features for fun-filled family holidays by the sea: a spacious games room, pool heating for comfort in the cooler months, sea views from a wide first floor terrace and proximity to the golden sands, seafront cafes and restaurants of Moledo’s picturesque shoreline.

Only a short distance from the waterfront itself, a series of cobbled village streets weave their way between typical homes, overlooked to the rear by a lush backdrop of forested slopes, before arriving at the entrance gates of Casa do Salgueiro. Here, within a boundary of traditional stone walls this characterful property welcomes with its rustic grounds of fruit trees and flowers, and views to the hillside beyond. Above the pool a spacious terrace adjoins the first-floor bedrooms, extending outwards to provide the perfect spot for lounging on a sofa whilst looking across neighbouring rooftops to the glistening ocean beyond.

A pleasing sense of space and a fresh décor of neutral tones prevails inside the house where a large section of the ground floor is occupied by one of the most charming living rooms we have seen. Here, the sitting and dining areas are delightfully connected by an original stone arch, the former kitchen is cleverly displayed beyond a wall of tiles that were purchased from Lisbon by the property’s previous owner, and bi-fold doors open out onto the poolside terrace to provide easy access for indoor-outdoor living.

With the sandy beach being just 1.2km away and the nearest restaurant a pleasant 600m stroll from the house, this is an ideal base for exploring this pretty coastal village without always requiring a car. Overlooking the waterfront, a selection of cafes and restaurants enjoy views to sea whilst within the village itself are some local shops for essentials.

Great Things to Do Near Casa do Salgueiro

Explore the cobbled streets of Caminha to discover some of the beautiful old stone houses, many built over a century ago...

Some have the family's coat of arms engraved into the walls, while others are adorned with attractive tiles and have wonderful old wooden doors or iron gates.

Follow the Vinho Verde wine trail...

Along the banks of the Minho Valley which passes between undulating hills covered with the vines which produce the lightly sparkling and very tasty wine of the region.

Discover the Serra d'Arga, a protected area with hiking trails and beautiful scenery which rises to almost 900 metres...

There are a number of way-marked trails taking walkers through majestic scenery passing lagoons and waterfalls and different types of fauna, such as the Iberian frog and the Garrano horses which roam freely in the mountain. In the heart of the Serra lie 8 villages which still preserve their local traditions and architecture.

The winding River Coura meanders down to Caminha and offers many delightful spots for picnicking...

River beaches are very popular in Northern Portugal as the water tends to be warmer than the Atlantic and they are more sheltered from the wind. As well as the river Coura, you can find some picturesque spots to enjoy along the Ancora, and Lima rivers.

Take a trip back in time at the Medieval Fair held in Caminha...

Costumes, music, food, dancing, horse shows and theatrical displays - everything goes Medieval in this delightful town for these few days. There are lots of arts and crafts to look at or buy too. This is one of the best festivals in Portugal!

Spend a day lazing on the beach in chic Moledo just over 1 km from the house...

When you feel the need for some refreshment, a number of smart snack bars lie just behind the beach and form the ideal setting for having a drink whilst looking out to sea and watching the world go by.

Spend a day souvenir hunting...

The people of the Alto Minho still continue with many ancient handicrafts passed down through generations. Viana do Castelo is renowned for its colourfully embroidered festival dresses, lace and pottery. But almost everywhere you can visit small artisanal workshops where weaving, basketwork, lacework, wood carving and toys are still made using traditional methods.

Visit the Aqua Museum (Aquamuseu) in Vila Nova de Cerveira...

See simulations of the River Minho, from its source near Lugo in Galicia to its mouth at Caminha and get to know the various species of fish and animals which inhabit the river. Entry is very reasonable and this is a great way to entertain the kids (and adults!).

Take a boat ride from Foz do Minho to the old island fortress of Insua Fort...

Local boat companies will take you across the water to this impressive building which houses a former Franciscan convent and church where the cloisters and chapel can still be seen.

Visit the little port of Vila Praia de Ancora, a coastal town a short drive away...

See the locals bring in the days catch and buy some fresh fish to cook on the barbecue for supper. There are pleasant walks to enjoy around the port area and along the beach promenade.

Visit Ponte de Lima, one of Portugal's oldest towns spreading lazily along the tree-line banks of the river Lima...

This is a beautiful town, with fine buildings and pretty cobbled squares. Delicious meals can be enjoyed in the restaurants in the old quarter followed by a stroll across the medieval bridge.

Climb up to Monte de Calvario in Vila Praia de Ancora for superb views over the town and coastline...

The wide steps here lead up to the chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes and the wooded hilltop is filled with beautifully scented Mimosa. Paths trail through the trees leading to some lovely spots for a picnic. There is also a little café and a small parking area if you prefer to drive up.

Experience the many different types of watersports on offer on the beaches and rivers...

With stunning, mountainous scenery and clean, fast flowing rivers the north of Portugal is particularly popular for white water rafting and hydrospeeding. The Rio Minho is ideal for beginners, while canyoning is available around Melgaco - but not for the fainthearted!

Feel closer to nature in the beautiful National Park of Peneda-Geres...

Drive for miles through the breathtaking mountain scenery of this stunning area of natural beauty. Spot birds of prey, wild horses, wild flowers and much more.

Go bird watching along the river banks...

The joining of the Minho and Coura rivers creates a unique habitat for wildlife. This protected area is made up of reed beds, salt marshes, mudflats and marshy wetland, making it excellent for bird watching.

Take the train along the scenic railway line to explore the beautiful city of Viana do Castelo...

The historical centre is mostly pedestrianised and is where most of the best buildings and shops are to be found. Take the elevator up to the Basilica of Santa Luzia which was inspired by the Sacré Coeur in Paris. From the basilica there are spectacular views of the city and the beach.

Wander through the local markets...

Browse the colourful stalls which sell everything you can imagine, mingle with the locals and watch the crowds shopping. In Barcelos you are sure to see many of the 'Galo de Barcelos' which is the town's emblem.
