Great Things to Do Near Casa Benamahoma
Swim in the lake near Arcos
The lake at El Santiscal close to Arcos has a sandy beach, bathing area, beach bar and watersports, open mid June - mid September, a fun day out for all the family.
Head to the Costa de la Luz
There are plenty of sandy beaches and coves to chose from if you fancy a day on the coast. Head towards Conil, El Palmar or El Puerto de Santa Maria where you will find long stretches of golden sandy beaches, sheltered coves and fantastic beach bars serving paella and fish.
Spend the day in Cádiz
The old town is an absolute gem. Some of things to experience - the Cathedral, climb the Torre Tavira, explore the castle and get a sense of its naval history, shop in the boutiques, stock up in the fish market or simply sit in one of the palm-lined plazas and people watch.
Stroll into the village for tapas
Located in the heart of the village, you have a choice of traditional tapas bars and restaurants to chose from, serving fresh river trout, local goats cheese, charcuterie meats, croquetas, meatballs, Padron peppers and more. Accompany your meal with a red wine from the Cadiz province.
Olé Jerez
The elegant city of Jerez makes for a great day out. Head to Calle Larga for fantastic shopping, a bustling food market, and tapas bars, all of which serve the local tipple sherry. On the outskirts of town, you can visit the Alcazar Palace, one of the sherry bodegas or the Royal Equestrian School.
Walk along the River Majaceite
Just down the lane from Casa Benamahoma is the start of the Rio Majaceite route. This easy route is approximately 4.4km long and follows the river down to the village of El Bosque.
Visit the neighbouring village of Grazalema
Head up the mountain road to the pretty white village of Grazalema with its picturesque Town Hall square, local shops, and tapas bars.
Visit Ronda
See the impressive gorge which divides the town into two, wander around the ancient streets within the old city walls, visit one of the oldest bullrings in Spain, explore the shops down Calle de la Bola, have a coffee in the Parador or enjoy lunch at one of the excellent restaurants.
Taste award winning cheeses
The local cheese is made from milk from the mountain Payoyo goats. You will see Payoyo cheese on offer in all tapas bars, restaurants and delicatessens. Look out for the labels as many have won awards.
Buy some leather goods
Visit the town of Ubrique where there are numerous outlets, factories and shops selling some famous brand name leather goods such as handbags, wallets, belts and gloves. You will find pretty streets and patios here too and some traditional eateries.
Go hiking!
The local tourist kiosk in Benamahoma is very informative and has plenty of maps and information regarding paths and hikes in the region. Please note some of these routes are protected and are not open in peak season, others require a permit, others are open to everyone. Breath in and enjoy the clear mountain air.
Enjoy the view!
Sit on the porch or pool terrace and enjoy the beautiful mountain views whilst enjoying a glass of wine or cold drink. Watch the vultures, eagles and many other birds of prey circle above you.
Botanical Gardens
The Jardín Botánico to the north of El Bosque is open 09.00 – 15.00 except Mondays and Bank Holidays. Admission is free and the paths are well maintained plus there are several benches where you can sit, relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Play golf!
There are some great courses in the area, all available to non-members, the closest is at Arcos Gardens. There are also numerous options closer to the city of Jerez.
