It is hard to imagine a more ideal setting from which to soak up the picture-postcard scenery of The Alpujarras than that enjoyed by this charming home. Just 1km from the bustling market town of Orgiva, amidst a picturesque patchwork of orchards and olive groves, Casa Pura’s pretty garden, fenced pool area and wide covered terraces look out across the most scenic of panoramas. A wide vista of rolling hills, interspersed with streams, ravines and oasis-like villages of gleaming white spreads out ahead to form a captivating natural backdrop that will not fail to delight.

The beautiful group of mountain valleys that runs east to west some 60km southeast of Granada, collectively known as The Alpujarras, has become a favoured destination for visitors keen to enjoy its pretty mountain villages, its far-reaching vistas and the delightful network of walking trails that meander through its valleys and woodlands.

Wishing to make the most of such scenic surroundings, the owner of Casa Pura has created a home in which outdoor living is the focus. Whilst the charming interior exudes the delightfully rustic ambiance of a typical Alpujarran cottage, with its crisp white walls and exposed wooden beams, it is outside in the spacious and thoughtfully designed terraces and garden where much of your time is likely to be spent. Here, spanning the property’s southwestern façade and looking out onto the rolling hills of the Sierra de Lujar, a fully equipped kitchen is housed within a wide covered terrace, thoughtfully fitted with ceiling fans, and conveniently positioned alongside the gated pool. Surrounding this, a pretty garden of colourful flowerbeds and lawns, interspersed with mature shrubs, palm and olive trees, completes the enticing scene.

With such attractive facilities available here at home, you may not feel the need to venture any further but if you do wish to mingle with the locals, Orgiva is just 1km away via a meandering rural lane. A range of typical restaurants and shops can be found here as well as a colourful local market on Thursday mornings. To the north, nestling beneath the imposing backdop of the Sierra Nevada, delightful mountain villages such as Pampaneira and Trevelez are well worth a visit, historic Granada is just 55 minutes away by car whilst a pleasant 30 minute drive south from the house will reveal the beaches of coastal Salobreña.

  • Since this is an area in which charcoal barbecue bans are enforced, an electric ‘plancha’ and gas barbecue are provided in addition to the outdoor kitchen facilities.

Relax!

Sit in one of the south facing terraces, overlooking the swimming pool and mountains beyond, sip a cool drink, read a book or simply do nothing but admire the view.

A morning stroll into town

Head up the lane to the centre of Orgiva where you can purchase freshly baked bread and pastries each morning, or a little further to the fresh food market where you can source the tropical fruits and vegetables grown in the area such as mango and avocado.

Cooking al fresco

You will undoubtedly spend more time outside than inside the villa. The spacious and newly fitted exterior kitchen is well equipped with a large oven and griddle, and the ideal spot to prepare and devour locally sourced meat, vegetables or fish from the Costa Tropical whilst sipping a cool drink and enjoying the surroundings.

A day at the magical Alhambra

Formerly a palace, fortress and small city, it was once the residence of Arabic sultans during the 13th and 14th centuries. The gardens are amazing, with walkways, fountains and beautiful flowers. The complex is rightly now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you don't want to drive into Granada, it is always possible to catch the bus.

Head up into the hills

Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira are all declared to be of historical monumental interest. They are famous for their colourful textiles, pottery and chocolate and are not to be missed.

Visit coastal town Salobreña

The old part of town is topped by an imposing Arabic castle offering wonderful views down the coastline and a variety of traditional tapas bars. Down in the new part of town, you will find more restaurants along the seafront as well as beach bars serving fresh sardines. The crystal clear waters here make it an ideal snorkel spot.

Wander around the orchard

Casa Pura has a pretty garden with beautiful flowers and palms and also fruit trees such as nispero, avocado, persimmon, plum and oranges.

Lanjarón

A pretty spa town with baths dating back to Roman times. You can visit the Balneario for a relaxing treatment or bathe in the locally sourced mineral water. The old town has typical Alpujarran architecture, an Arabic Castle and restaurants whose terraces enjoy views over the surrounding valley.

Visit a Tibetan monastery

O Sel Ling (which means clear light) is a place of serenity, with amazing views over the Sierra Nevada, Orgiva and the coast and the air is marvellous. You'll find it off the road to Trevelez from Orgiva. They welcome visitors from 3 -6 pm only.

Nerja Caves

Situated in Maro just 3 kms outside Nerja near the coast, they have Palaeolithic wall paintings, stalactites and stalagmites and the world's widest column. Quite breathtaking, they are amongst the best caves in Europe.

Aquatropic, Almuñecar

Treat the children to a day of fun in this coastal waterpark - expect the usual wave pools, flumes and slides.

Experience the real flamenco

Take a walk along the River Darro in Granada to the gypsy quarter Sacromonte. Gypsies have been living in caves here for over 600 years, they hold flamenco shows in the caves or offer impromptu shows in the local bars.
