Originally a shepherds' refuge, this pretty cottage nestles in the countryside just outside the old Roman town of Pollença. Sympathetically extended and refurbished to a high standard, this house offers the best of both worlds - a beautiful rural situation at the foothills of the Puig de Maria and easy access to the excellent amenities of Pollença town and Port de Pollença.

Décor is modern, light and pleasant while at the same time retaining the feel of a traditional countryside property. For added comfort the thoughtful owner has installed air conditioning in the living room and bedrooms.

Externally a wide sun terrace leads onto the private swimming pool sparkling just beyond and tiled in an attractive green colour to blend with its rural surroundings. The extensive grounds around the house are a fascinating natural landscape of wild grasses, plants, olive, carob and fig trees.

All amenities and many excellent restaurants can be found in the narrow cobbled streets of Pollença town, which is a convenient 5 minute drive. The sandy beaches of Cala Sant Vicenç and impressive Pollença Bay are 5 minutes further and Pollença Golf Club is 3.3km. This is truly a delightful hideaway cottage in a lovely location.

Puig de Maria

Just past the rooster roundabout on the road from Pollença to Palma on the left, is the start of the walk up to the top of Puig de Maria. It's best to go first thing in the morning wearing sensible shoes. Don't forget your camera and a bottle of water although there is a bar at the top. The views over the north coast are outstanding.

Sunday Market in Pollença

The market in Pollença on Sunday morning is a colourful, bustling event where you can buy your locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as souvenirs and presents. Have a look inside the church while you are there as it is quite impressive.

Explore Pollença

Spend an evening walking around the town of Pollença, making the effort to climb the 365 steps up to the Calvary church and browsing in the curious little shops, before sitting down to relax with a drink and dinner in one of the many popular restaurants in the pedestrianised squares. There is a children's park and playground nearby.

Battle of the Moors and the Christians

Pollença is famous for its simulated battle of the Moors and the Christians which takes place on 01-02 August. The whole town takes part in the celebrations.

Head for the beach

At the Port of Pollença the beach is spacious, has all amenities, parking along the seafront and if it gets hot there is a little playground in a small wood for some respite from the sun.

Pollença Classical Music Festival

The Pollença Classical Music Festival is held in July and August, featuring various well-known bands, quartets and soloists - a great variety of programmes to choose from.

Local vineyard

Visit the vineyard, Bodegues Ca'n Vidalet, at the end of the lane, go straight across and down the lane on the other side of the road to try a truly local wine.

Lluc Monastery

Follow the mountain road from Pollença to the monastery at Lluc and see the chapel, you may be fortunate enough to hear the Blauets Choir. Visit the museum, and don't miss a small botanic garden at the back of the monastery which takes about 15 minutes to stroll around, or the rock formation in the shape of a camel.

Visit Palma - go by train!

If you'd like to visit the capital city, Palma, and are not keen on driving, then take the train from Sa Pobla. Palma is an excellent shopping centre and has many interesting historical buildings to visit.

Or, take a train to Sóller!

Take the old-fashioned train ride through the mountains from Palma (or Bunyola) to Sóller and back, including the tram to the Port de Sóller through the orange groves. Sit in the square in Sóller, enjoying a drink and watch the world go by.

Boat trips from the local coves and ports can make a lovely day or half day out from Port de Pollença or Port d'Alcúdia going to Formentor or around the headlands.

Tramuntana Mountains

Drive over the Tramuntana mountain roads taking in the spectacular scenery, stopping at the various viewpoints including two lakes/reservoirs, and passing through several world-renowned towns like Deià and Valldemossa, home to famous painters, writers and musicians. Look out for the wild mountain goats on the way.

Ornithologists will know about the birdwatching area at the Albufera and Albufereta where you can see several different species of wading birds, amongst others.

Visit La Granja

A visit to La Granja in Esporles is well worthwhile. Mallorca's waterparks provide a fun day out for all the family; the nearest to Pollença is at Port d'Alcúdia where there is also a mini-golf course!

Formentor Lighthouse

A scenic drive will take you to Formentor Lighthouse - the road is quite narrow in places. At the top of the hill out of Port de Pollença, it is worth stopping at the viewpoint to see El Colomer rock and although the beach at Formentor is not very large, it has clear shallow water ideal for children and adults alike, with some good waters for snorkelling. Go early, with a picnic.

Caves of Campanet

The Caves of Campanet, discovered by a shepherd about 100 years ago, are not too far away and worth a visit to see the fascinating formation of stalagmites and stalactites. These caves are not too commercialised and visits are on the hour. For Mallorca's most impressive caves, travel over to the east coast and visit the Caves of Drach.

In an easterly direction

Going further afield, drive through the resorts of Port d'Alcúdia and Ca'n Picafort towards Artà where basket making is one of the local trades. Then take a country lane to the hermitage of Betlem where the views overlook Colònia de Sant Pere in the Bay of Alcúdia. Back to Artà, and if you are interested in prehistoric building, then visit the Poblat de Ses Paisses before carrying on to Capdepera to see the castle.

Old Alcúdia and market days

Sunday or Tuesday market in Old Alcúdia is interesting and has a plentiful supply of locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, then just stroll round the pedestrianised old Roman town where caper plants are growing out of the main massive thick stone walls surrounding the town.
