The azure waters of the Mediterranean shimmer enticingly beyond the neat poolside terraces and light-filled living room of this attractive coastal home, which looks south towards the seemingly endless golden sands of Son Bou, Menorca’s longest stretch of uninterrupted beach.

Backed by dunes and a conserved area of nature reserve, the sweeping sands are enticingly close to hand at Villa Sonya, which benefits from an advantageous location in the pretty neighbourhood of Torre Soli. From its privileged setting, a short stroll west will take you to the edge of the residential area, from where a scenic footpath winds its way through the countryside to the unspoilt sandy beach of Atalis. Accessible only on foot, some 25 minutes’ walk from the house, this is an idyllic tract of rural coastline.

For those seeking a more lively ambience, the family-friendly resort of Son Bou, with its bars, restaurants and shops set just a short distance back from the beach, is only 1km away in the other direction and whilst many will no doubt enjoy the walk, the local bus service is also an option since this offers services not only from Torre Soli to Son Bou but also to the local market town of Alaior and Maó, the island’s historic capital.

You could however be forgiven for simply wishing to stay at home and relax by the pool since the well-presented accommodation and thoughtfully planned outdoor area of Villa Sonya provide the most pleasant of settings in which to do so. Flanked by a deep covered veranda that spans the entire width of the property’s façade and looks onto the pool below, it has been designed to ensure that whether you are relaxing on a sofa in the living room, lounging by the pool or enjoying dinner al fresco the pleasing maritime scene will stretch out ahead of you to form an absorbing outlook. Conveniently close by, the nearest of the neighbourhood’s restaurants is just 400m away, making dining out an appealing option, whilst a stroll of 350m will reveal the local supermarket.

whilst dining in one of the beach restaurants at Son Bou.

Spend the day on the beach at Son Bou

Menorca's largest beach is stunning and with a whole range of amenities, there is plenty of fun things to do.

Visit the Son Bou basilica

Built in the late 5th century and early 6th century, the Paleochristian basilica is one of the best remnants left by the first Christians on the Balearic Islands.

Buy award winning local cheese

Coinga, on the industrial estate in Alaior, makes delicious cheese from milk collected from the farms in the area. The shop is open to the public and although there are no tours of the factory, its possible to see the cheese being made from the viewing platforms.

Visit a traditional town house in Alaior

and see how the local people lived in the past. The house is on Carrer Ample, number 12 and it is open to the public from Monday to Friday from 10.30am to 1.30pm and from 6.30 to 8.30pm.

Step into the past

with a visit to Torre d'en Galmés, just a few minutes drive along the road towards Alaior. Walk under the stone archways and explore the buildings that were once home to prehistoric man.

Visit the evening market

which is held every Wednesday from 7pm.  Local artisans come along to sell their products on colourful stalls as the town centre is transformed into a huge craft fair.

Get lost

in the narrow streets of Alaior´s old quarter where you will find a variety of independent shops and boutiques.  Make time to stop for a coffee and try some of the “dolços” , which are little cakes typical of the town.

Make a splash

at the water park at Biniancolla.  With a variety of slides from gentle to daring, a lazy river, jacuzzi, picnic area, bar and restaurant, there is something to please everyone.

Go exploring

at the the Santa Ponça quarry which is on the left just before you reach Alaior.  Disused for many years, nature has taken over and transformed something that was once industrial into something very beautiful.

Visit Mao

the island´s capital which has a wealth of shops, historical sites, craft markets, bars and restaurants.

Explore the sand dunes and wetlands

at the back of Son Bou beach. Many birds flock to the area during the migration season, including Egyptian Vultures and Booted Eagles.

Music on the streets

Every Tuesday night in the high season, in Mao there is live music on the street.  A variety of artists is always available and this can be anything from an opera singer to a rock band, and these are all dotted around the squares in the centre. The shops stay open too until 11pm and the bars all have their pavement terraces set up so you can grab a drink and tapa and listen to any groups that you like.

As a change from the beach

visit the Lloc de Menorca, the island´s only zoo.
The Lloc Menorca is a new concept of zoo park where they are committed to different environmental conservation and enrichment programmes in order to guarantee a better quality of life for the animals, many of which are rescue animals.
Go deep into the lemurs forest, where you will be able to discover these friendly and curious animals. Take the chance to feed the friendly goats and watch the mischievous behaviour of the macaque monkeys.

Drive over to Es Grau

a small fishing village on the north coast not far from Mao. The sheltered sandy beach and the warm shallow sea are ideal for relaxing and perfect for the children. The nearby nature trail winds around the back of the sand dunes, through the woods, and skirts part of the fresh water lake, the Albufera, which is a bird sanctuary.

Discover Alaior

by doing the tourist route where you can see panoramic views over Menorca from the roof terraces at the Santa Eulalia church and walk in the underground tunnels that were used for shelter during the civil war.

Visit the donkey rescue centre

which is now home to dozens of rescued donkeys.  Entrance is free but they would appreciate it if you took along a bag of apples or carrots.

Definitely not to be missed is a drive to the top of Monte Toro,

the highest point of the island, and right in the centre. From the summit you can pick out every town on the island and enjoy beautiful views across the countryside. The monastery here is no longer used as such, but the lovely church, tended by nuns, is very special to all Menorcans.  Stop for a coffee and traditional Menorcan pastisset in the little cafe afterwards.
