Craft markets
In the height of the summer, the centre of Alaior is transformed into a huge craft market every Wednesday evening, where local artisans sell their products on colourful stalls and street entertainment by local bands adds to the atmosphere. In fact, the town is famous for its traditional crafts and tours are run by the local tourist office where you can visit shops and workshops that have often been in the same families for generations. High quality footwear, costume jewellery as well as cheese, cured meats and ice cream are just some of the traditional products that can be bought.
Beaches
Son Bou with its fine white sand and deep blue sea is the largest beach on the island and is just a short drive from Alaior. Being part of a resort there are plenty of activities available including an inflatable obstacle course a few metres from the shore, water slides and water sports. Apart from the beach bars, many good restaurants can be found in the resort itself as well as some smart boutiques and a great shop that sells a variety of local produce.
In the other direction, Cala en Porter is a large, sheltered cove surrounded by cliffs and backed by wetlands. Being an urban beach there are also plenty of facilities there as well as a couple of bars right on the edge of the sand. The resort is most famous for the Cova d’en Xoroi bar/night club which is built into caves in the cliffs.
Completely untouched by tourism, Cala Llucalari a small, sandy, pristine cove to the east of Son Bou is the perfect place to “get away from it all” and be at one with nature.
Historic attractions
The Torre d'en Galmes talaiotic village is the largest prehistoric settlement in the Balearic Islands and a great place to visit to see how the first Menorcans lived. The talaiots themselves are mounds that were used as look out points, so there are some fabulous views from various places around the village.
Calas Coves is considered a magical place to many of the locals and is certainly a great place to explore with over 90 caves built into stunning cliffs that were once a prehistoric necropolis. As it is very sheltered it is also a great spot for swimming and snorkelling with a great variety of marine life.
