History and architecture
Pézenas is surprisingly grand for its size, thanks to it having been the seat of the Parliament of Languedoc until the mid 17th century and a key place of commerce with five annual trade fairs taking place. The merchants who settled here built beautiful townhouse mansions with carved stone façades. Of particular note is Hôtel Lacoste with its superb vaulted courtyard, as well as several historic churches.
Shopping & markets
Pézenas is known for its antique shops, which are found on the western side of town, as well as a host of arts and crafts workshops, boutiques and galleries, so you can easily spend a morning browsing and window-shopping or perhaps choosing a special souvenir of your time here.
On Saturday morning, the large weekly market adds extra colour and bustle to the streets, with stalls offering local and regional specialities, fresh produce, flowers and all sorts of wares.
Theatre
The town has a proud connection with the playwright, Molière, who spent time here with his travelling theatre company. A festival celebrating his works is held every year in June. There are also various claims to fame around the town, such as the Molière’s armchair displayed in the Vulliod Saint Germain museum! Those with some French might like to take in a play at the beautifully restored Theatre Historique, which runs a full and varied programme (not just Molière).
Activities nearby
There are tennis courts in Pézenas, and bike hire is available. There are plenty of opportunities for cycling and walking in the surrounding vine-covered countryside, including easy family routes alongside the Canal du Midi. Other, less energetic activities include vineyard tours to taste the local Languedoc wines, or a visit to a spa centre for some pampering and relaxation.
