Wine tasting
Duravel is almost completely surrounded by vineyards which produce the delicious Cahors wines, mostly from Malbec grapes. The countryside on each bank of the winding river Lot going towards Cahors is striped with vines and dotted with ‘châteaux’ and ‘domaines’ offering tastings (‘dégustations’) and direct sale of their wines, as well as restaurants serving delicious local cuisine, perhaps accompanied by a bottle of the best Cahors red.
Markets
The best market in this area is Prayssac and it takes place every Friday morning around the church and the main square. You will find a lot of seasonal, organic, locally grown fruit and vegetables but also cheese, poultry and other meats, honey and wine, of course. The market is the best place to buy good quality, fresh food and there are plenty of markets in this area including: a tiny one in Duravel on Saturdays, a big one in Monsempron-Libos on Thursdays, and on Tuesdays a mid-sized one in the pretty village next door, Puy-l’Evêque.
Eating out
There are many lovely restaurants in the area, including a good selection in Puy-l’Evêque and many more in Fumel, Prayssac and the other villages roundabouts. In July and August, evening markets take place in different villages, such as every Thursday in Loubéjac. These present a really special experience for visitors and locals to share, eating dishes prepared with local produce at long tables set out under fabulous starry skies.
Family fun
800 metres from the village, beside the river, there is a campsite with large heated swimming pools, big water slides, playground equipment and games. Great fun for the children!
