Food and drink
The area is great for gastronomy generally, with many excellent restaurants dotted across the countryside and in various villages such as Goujounac and Puy-l’Evêque. And being close Cahors, there is plenty of opportunity to sample the famous wines produced here.
Fresh, tasty, locally grown fruit and vegetables, as well as honey, wine and cheese made in the region can be bought at the regular producers’ markets in nearby villages such as in Cazals on Saturday, Puy-l’Evêque on Tuesday and many others.
During the summer months many villages also hold a weekly evening food market. Here, large tables are set up and people gather round and enjoy food from local producers, very often to the accompaniment of local musicians – reminiscent of the big feast seen at the end of the famous Astérix cartoon books! One of the best in this area is at nearby Loubéjac on a Thursday evening in July and August.
Sports and outdoor activities
It is only about 15 minutes by car to reach the river Lot, where you can hire canoes or kayaks, boats or bicycles to enjoy the views along the river.
Golfers can do 9 holes at the ‘Neuf de Bouysset’ course near Saint-Martin-le-Redon, whilst keen rock climbers can indulge their passion on the cliffs near Gavaudun.
And for something a little different, why not take to the air and try paragliding at Douelle or hot-air ballooning at Carnac-Rouffiac (both about half an hour away).
Visits in the area
The well preserved Château of Bonaguil, set on the bank of the River Lot, is within half an hour’s drive, whilst the Château of Biron and the lovely little bastide of Monpazier are only a little further. And between the two, the sweet village of Gavaudun with its small café-restaurant sits at the foot of its tall castle tower.
A similar distance away, near Gourdon, you can visit the Grottes de Cougnac, caves with stunning natural formations as well as prehistoric paintings.
Family fun
The Parc-en-Ciel in nearby Lacapelle-Biron makes for a great day out for families, with treetop adventure trails, mini golf, a free jump for the daredevils, and playground equipment. You can take a picnic or buy refreshments on site, and don’t forget your swimming kit so you can cool down in the pool (which is regulated by biological rather than chemical processes).
