About Spartohori

Walk to/around the village

Spartohori village is situated on the cliff overlooking the bay below. The village environs make a lovely spot for trekking due to the abundant, surrounding pine forests. Fitter visitors may choose to ascend the hillside from the bay or there is also a set of steps offering alternative access (an average 10-15 minute climb). In either case the reward is a series of fantastic views that progressively improve as you draw closer to the top of the village.

Spilia Beach

Located at the far end of the bay below Spartohori, Spilia is one of the main beaches on the island. Home to a couple of tavernas and simple tourist facilities, backed by shady pine and cypress trees, the beach’s white pebbles blend harmoniously with lustrous, translucent waters. Interestingly, Spilia is rarely very busy – even in the peak season.

Church of Agios Ioannis

Dedicated to St John the Baptist, the church is one of the oldest standing monuments in Meganisi. Located on the pebbled seashore of Agios Ioannis beach, it is the only part of a monastery that survives to this day. The church was destroyed by pirates with the venerated icon of St John himself, having originally been lost to the sea, eventually found by local fishermen. The island celebrates the Feast of St John annually on 24th June.
