Sightseeing
The narrow streets of the centro storico eventually lead to the principal landmarks: the main square Piazza Plebiscito, the grand Baroque church of Santa Maria Assunta and the Ducal Castle. You can also see the remains of four concentric defensive walls around the old town.
One for the foodies
Ceglie Messapica is known as a gastronomic destination in this region. There are many excellent eateries, ranging from traditional trattoria to Michelin starred. Whilst in Ceglie, be sure to try the local sweet treat, Biscotto Cegliese. Hand shaped, they are rich and moist and made from ground almonds, cherry jam (often sour cherries) and a touch of lemon zest or cinnamon.
Festivals
On 13th June each year, Ceglie Messapica holds its 'festa' in honour of its patron saint, Sant’Antonio di Padova, with a religious procession and masses taking place in the day and fireworks in the evening. And in late August, the Ceglie Food Festival draws food lovers and chefs for demonstrations, tastings, workshops and street food stalls. There is also live music and DJ sets.
