Nearby towns and villages

To the north of Seixas lies the fortress town of Valença surrounded by ancient stone walls and grassy banks. Valença marks Portugal’s natural border with Spain and forms a striking landmark atop a hill overlooking the river Minho. To the south, historic Caminha offers a number of delights to visitors along with neighbouring Moledo village, with charming cobbled streets and a large beach to enjoy. Slightly further south lies Vila Praia de Ancora; a large seaside town with a working harbour, family friendly beach and an abundance of restaurants.

Peneda Geres National Park

Created in 1971, this protected area of natural beauty is great for hiking and exploring. There are picturesque villages with have seen little change since the 12th century, wild horses, waterfalls and forests of oak and pine. The park has designated picnic sites and good viewpoints for photo opportunities. Activities such as canyoning and canoeing are available but if hiking appeals, the well conserved Roman road with its ancient milestones is interesting, while several other itineraries pass medieval castles, monasteries, sanctuaries and dolmens.
