About Valenca

Introduction

Valença has been settled since pre-historic times and was later a focus for the defence of Northern Portugal from its Spanish neighbour. It can be easily reached by train at points along the coast of the Minho region. Its attractions include exploring the battlements of the fort and the historic centre although many are tempted by the numerous textile and linen shops.

The Beaches

The large, sandy beaches of the Costa Verde offer excellent facilities for surfing the best of these being Afife beach and adjoining Praia da Arda where there is a surf school and equipment for hire. There are also sheltered beaches either at Caminha or at Camposancos on the Spanish side of the Minho. Most beaches have cafés or restaurants although they remain uncommercialised.  River beaches are also worth seeking out on both the Minho and Lima rivers.

Wine Routes

Wine routes are mainly concentrated along the rivers in the North of Portugal. On the Minho, Monçao and Melgaço are the home of the Alvarinho. There are several routes along the rivers, which pass through ancient towns and amazing scenery. The routes also offer the opportunity of seeing some of the many noble manor houses in the area.

Ecovias

During recent years eco trails have developed along the river banks of the Minho and Lima as well as the Atlantic coast from south of Porto to Caminha. The Minho route stretches from Valença to Monçao along the route of an old railway line while the Lima route starts near Viana do Castelo to Ponte de Barca with shorter sections also available on the north bank. They are suitable for cycling or walking and are an ideal way to be in touch with nature. Along the routes various information boards will tell you what to watch out for along the way.
