Conil de la Frontera

About Conil de la Frontera

About the area

Conil is a fishing village with a pretty town centre filled with whitewashed houses, plazas, arches and patios reminding us of its Arabic past. Enjoying a prominent position on the Costa de la Luz, its maritime influence is still evident in its cuisine and way of life.

Famous not just for its beaches but also the pine forests. The Pinar de Roche forest is popular with walkers and cyclists. It is easy to hire bikes from a local supplier and have them delivered to your villa.

Conil has a good selection of supermarkets as well as local independent grocery stores, fishmongers and butchers. The daily food market opens 6 mornings a week and sells fresh fish, seafood, meat, vegetables, fruit and flowers.

Eating Out

Conil restaurants cater for everyone. There are silver service establishments offering local cuisine and wine pairings and traditional tapas bars where the bill is still etched on the bar in chalk. Local dishes focus on fish, cooked in the oven, baked in salt, served in tomato or onion-based sauces or simply fried. Children are welcome in all bars and restaurants. Throughout the year, there are tapas competitions, where bars and restaurants serve and compete to serve the best tapa, tuna or Retinto beef dish.

Flamenco

Although the larger flamenco tablaos are in Jerez and Cádiz, Conil has a local flamenco society which has shows on twice a week during the summer. These performances are put on in a pretty geranium filled patio and feature singing and dancing accompanied by a guitar.

The Beaches

Conil has a fantastic choice of golden sandy beaches to choose from. The beach which lies directly in front of this fishing town is Los Bateles. It is bordered by a promenade lined with fish restaurants, and there are also several beach bars serving fried fish, paella and snacks down on the sand. To the north of the town, the beaches La Fontanilla and La Fuente del Gallo, are both sheltered by cliffs and dotted with beach bars and more formal restaurants, ideal spots from which to watch the beautiful sunsets.
