Beaches
The long sandy bay that is the Platja de Pals stretches over four kilometres and plays host to a variety of water sports. At the southern end, we find the hidden cove of Platja Illa Roja, a sandy horseshoe naturalist beach.
The tiny fishing villages of Sa Riera and Sa Tuna are both lovely beaches to spend the day, each with a smattering of seafront restaurants and bars dotted amidst the old fishermen’s cottages.
Seafood restaurants
Here one is spoilt for choice. Along and around the beach of Platja de Pals there are several seafood restaurants whilst the village of Pals boasts a fine selection of restaurants offering traditional Catalan cuisine ; try the local Paella equivalent ‘Arròs a la cassola’.
Shopping and markets
There are 2 supermarkets between Platja de Pals and the village of Pals. Nearby Torrella de Montgri hosts a colourful street market every Monday.
Concerts & Fiestas
The Grand Fiesta of Pals ‘Festa Major’ is held during the first week of August with plenty of music, dancing and street markets.
Throughout the month of July, the beautiful Romanesque church in Pals holds guitar concerts every Friday evening with performers from all over Europe.
Aiguamolls de Pals
Aiguamolls de Pals is a wetlands nature reserve at the northern end of the Pals beach, around the mouth of the River Ter. It is a protected haven for a huge variety of birds, fish and the natural environment, and is a great place to visit for all nature lovers.
Mojitos in Begur
Nearby Begur is well worth a visit. A fascinating maze of winding cobbled streets crowned with a stunning floodlit 11th century castle. Market day is Wednesday.
The first weekend of September sees the celebration of the ‘Fira d’Indians’, a spectacular fiesta when the whole town celebrates its historic connections with Cuba. Salsa music and dancing bring the streets to life as endless mojitos are served as a fitting refreshment.
Horse riding & Diving
A number of water sports are on offer at Platja de Pals beach, such as windsurfing, wakeboarding and paragliding to name a few. Keen golfers will be pleased to know that there are also two excellent golf courses in the area. Horse riding is popular and there are many horse riding stables in the area.
Nearby Estartit offers boat trips around the Medes Islands with glass-bottomed boats and there is a selection of diving schools in the area offering ‘Try Dives’ and courses.
There are many walking routes for the energetic but, for those seeking a more relaxed outing, a drive around the numerous medieval stone villages stopping here and there for a drink or lunch offers an attractive alternative
