Great Things to Do Near Kristi
Spot the Sunken Airplane!
Strolling along the waterfront in Vathy, keep a look out for the seaplane which lies in the shallow waters. Head to the eastern side, almost opposite the church and near a house with blue shutters just behind you, where you can see if just off the edge of the quay.
Take a trip to Lefkada
Catch the ferry to Nydri and browse around the shops, have a spot of lunch, or try something more energetic such as wakeboarding or waterskiiing.
Feast of Sardines
This festival is held in the square of Vathi in July every year, and Sardines are the guest of honour! The celebrations include a main course of roasted fish and local wine, with the accompaniment of the traditional orchestra.
Visit the Papanikolis Cave
This is the second largest cave in Greece, and its location halfway down the 'tail' of Meganisi can only be reached by boat. Once inside you will see crystal waters and a small beach. It also has historical significance, as during WWII a submarine hid in the water in this cave.
Island hiking
There are many old footpaths that cross the island leading to secluded beaches, small settlements and little chapels.
Put your feet up!
Take advantage of the tranquillity and slow pace of Meganisi – switch off and relax, read a book, or just soak up the sun whilst lazing beside the glimmering waters of your private pool.
Go snorkelling
Don a mask and snorkel and marvel at the underwater world of rich marine life to be seen in the crystal clear waters of Meganisi's beaches.
Take a Trip to Ithaca
Just 14 nautical miles from Meganisi, Ithaca is a lovely island to go for the day to explore. Similar in size to Meganisi, the ferry takes passengers from Spilia to Ithaca in just one hour and forty five minutes. Ferries operated by Lefkada Palace take place in the high season only and generally just once per week.
Spend the day at the beach
You are spoilt for choice here as the beaches all have crystal clear waters and are surrounded by lush greenery. They are rarely crowded, with some only accessed on foot or by boat.
Spend the evening in Spartochori
Within easy walking distance, the charming village of Spartochori is the perfect place to spend an evening enjoying a traditional Greek feast and sampling the Greek wine. Why not enjoy an Ouzo or two to end the evening?
Church of Agios Ioannis
On the western side of the island is one of Meganisi's most important churches, Agios Ioannis Prodomos (St John the Baptist). It is believed to have been built before 1477 AD.
Enjoy a leisurely lunch
... in the quaint harbour at Vathy where you will mingle with the locals and eat some of the best seafood. Idle hours can be spent watching the boats come and go.
Hire a boat
One of the best ways to see the island is by hiring a boat. You can explore the coastline and nearby islands including Skorpios, formerly home to the famous Onassis family.
