One of the most iconic images of Puglia is surely the picture postcard town of Polignano a Mare, where limestone cliffs topped with white washed buildings edge a small pebble beach lapped by turquoise waters. This spectacular coastal town, with all its delights, is a mere 10 minute drive from L’Incanto, a smart and eye-catching villa, set in a residential estate of properties of similar striking architectural design.

Outdoor living is the focus at L’Incanto, where the wraparound terrace provides plenty of options of dining and relaxing: a covered terrace under the quirky shaped roof, with comfy outdoor sofas and shutters to create a shady spot; to the rear a barbecue area, conveniently positioned close to the kitchen. Continue around past the jacuzzi to an open pergola area and finally to the vine draped terrace overlooking the beautiful pool, with its appealing mini pool designed for those that simply want to cool off and relax. Lawned areas dotted with olive trees complete this fabulous outdoor space.

Internally, the muted colour palette provides a calming backdrop to the furnishings. Bolts of colour come from the paintings and the tiled shower room, and interesting driftwood and rope features on the walls evoke the beaches and coves in the area.

Within a 30 minute drive up or down the coast, take your pick from tiny coves, rocky outcrops, sandy beaches, chic beach clubs and coastal villages that hum with life during the summer. In addition to Polignano a Mare, take time to visit the port city of Bari and its ‘centro storico’, and Monopoli with its photogenic harbour full of colourful fishing boats. And finally, head inland to Conversano (7km) for essential supplies – this lovely town slips under the radar somewhat but we are sure you will enjoy wandering its limestone paved streets and stopping for a cappuccino or apertivo in the piazza.

Great Things to Do Near L'Incanto

Go underground and visit the ‘Grotte di Castellana’

The town of Castellana is famous for its network of caves, the largest in Italy. They are over  3km in length, go to a depth of 122m, and the temperature stays a constant 16.5C, so a refreshing place to visit when the outside temperatures soar.  There are a couple of tours available: visit the full length or a shorter version of 1km.

Cherries of Conversano

Early June, Conversano celebrates the cherry (the ‘Red Gold of Puglia’) with the Ferrovia Cherry Festival.  Cooking demonstrations, tastings, cooking classes take over the town, as well as stalls selling delicious produce featuring this star fruit!  The Ferrovia cherry is native to this area and according to folklore, is so called because this particular cherry was found growing on a tree by the railway line nearby.  Cuttings were taken and grafted onto other trees and the area become known for this delicious cherry.

Picture Postcard Polignano

Gracing many a postcard and Insta post, Polignano a Mare is a picture postcard seaside town – white washed houses line narrow streets and perch atop the cliffs with fabulous views over the turquoise sea and beaches below.  With L'Incanto only a 10minute drive from Polignano a Mare, it is easy to visit many times during your holiday.

Trulli of Alberobello

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Alberobello is famous for its trulli: tiny limestone houses topped by conical roofs. Built without mortar, the houses mostly date from the 14th century, but the building technique has been used since ancient times. You will see them everywhere in this part of Puglia, especially in the Valle d’Itria but Alberobello is quite literally made up of them, there are over 1500.  Visit early morning or late in the day to see them without the crowds.

Walk (Run?) in the footsteps of Bond

and visit Matera, the fascinating troglodyte city just over the border in Basilicata.  It has many accolades: a UNESCO World Heritage Site, European City of Culture in 2019 and the location of some great scenes in the Bond film 'No Time to Die'.

Volare oh oh, Cantare oh oh

That famous song (we all know the tune!) was originally called Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu and was written and sung by Domenico Modugno, who was from Polignano a Mare. Look for the statue of him in one of the squares in the town, overlooking the sea.

Gargano Peninsula

For a full day out, explore the Gargano Peninsula.  Most Italians tend to flock to the seaside towns of Vieste and Peschici – make time to go as they are lovely places. But there is also the Foresta Umbra (UNESCO listed) which is home to over 2000 species of plants and trees – a beautiful place to walk and cycle.  The town of Monte Sant’Angelo is famous for its Basilica and, surprisingly, for its sourdough loaf!

Città Bianche

The white towns of the Valle d’Itria are charming places to wander around. They all have the whitewashed buildings and a ‘centro storico’ (historic centre) with a maze of narrow streets but each one is different. Spend a morning in each (followed by lunch of course) to discover their charms.

Florence of the South

Otherwise known as Lecce, the capital of Puglia. It is a city that fully embraced the Baroque style of architecture. Much remains today making Lecce a wonderful city to walk around. Visit the Basilica di Santa Croce and see if you can spot, on its ornate façade, griffins, dodos, angels and sheep…
