Set back from and below the main road linking Pollença with Sa Pobla, Ca’n Joan offers that highly prized combination; charming, well-appointed accommodation, a hugely appealing (and very sunny) private pool, dramatic views across countryside to the Tramuntana mountains and the wonderful convenience of being only 1.5km from iconic Pollença or a 10-15 minute drive to gorgeous sandy beaches. For these fine qualities alone, Ca’n Joan could well be the dictionary definition of ‘desirable’!

Bright, homely and welcoming throughout, the property is impeccably cared for by delightful local owners whose only concern is that guests feel comfortable and well looked after.

The open plan living/dining room, spacious and well-furnished, has direct access to the seating terrace on one side, the dining terrace on the other. Beamed ceilings in the bedrooms and bathroom add atmosphere while subtle influences of traditional Mallorca can be discerned in the choice of colours and fabrics for the décor.

And there is so much to recommend about the outdoor areas. Mature shrubs, mini-cypresses and neatly trimmed hedging enhance privacy around the pool which is also bordered on one side by a well-kept lawn providing additional recreational space for younger party members in particular. Eye-catching views across the Colonya Valley, a large in-built barbecue for al fresco catering, table tennis and an abundance of cooling shade provided by two separate covered terraces mean these environs are tailor-made for easy summer living.

Vibrant, atmospheric and friendly there is always something of interest happening in Pollença (1.5km). Excellent amenities plus a wide selection of restaurants to suit all taste and budgets can be found there as well as in Port de Pollença (7.9km) where the long and gently shelving sandy beach has boat trips, scuba diving and various water sports on offer. Walkers and cyclists will enjoy exploring the intricate network of country lanes threaded through the immediate area, the nearby S’Albufereta Nature Reserve attracts a vast variety of birdlife while golfers will find a nine hole course at 2km and a notably scenic eighteen hole course (with a very highly regarded restaurant) at Alcanada, 13km.

Great Things to Do Near Ca'n Joan

Go to the market!

Pollença market on Sunday morning is a colourful bustling event where you can buy your locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as a few souvenirs and presents. Have a look inside the church which is very impressive.

Play a round of golf!

Mallorca has a great variety of golf courses and the closest to Puerto Pollença is the 9-hole course at Pollença. Aucanada has an 18-hole course with beautiful views overlooking the Bay of Alcúdia.

Explore the old town of Pollença

Stroll around the old town of Pollença. It's definitely worth making the effort to climb the 365 steps up to the Calvary church and browsing in the curious little shops before sitting down to relax with a drink and dinner in one of the many popular restaurants in the pedestrianised squares.

Old Roman town of Alcúdia

Tuesday market in Old Alcúdia is interesting and has a plentiful supply of locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, then just stroll round the pedestrianised old Roman town where caper plants are growing out of the main massive thick stone walls surrounding the town. The local council offer a free guided tour around the historical centre of Alcúdia old town on Wednesdays and Fridays during the summer months.

Visit to a local vineyard

Visit the local vineyard, Bodegues Ca’n Vidalet, and try a truly local wine. The entrance to this vineyard is on the left about 1.8 kms down the road from the cockerel roundabout towards Alcudia (Ma-2201).

Sóller and its Port by train

The old-fashioned train ride through the mountains from Palma (or Bunyola) to Sóller and back, including the tram to the Port of Sóller through the orange groves and back, and just sitting in the church square in Sóller enjoying a drink and watching the world go by.

Visit the Gordiola glass works

just outside the town of Algaida on the Manacor – Palma road. Gordiola glass was established in 1719. You can watch craftsmen working, and see the kilns, museum and shop.

Puig de Maria

The start of the walk uphill to Puig de Maria (puig=hillock) is just before the rooster roundabout on the right of the main road towards Port de Pollença. It's best to go first thing in the morning, wearing sensible shoes and don't forget your camera. Take a bottle of water with you although there is a bar at the top.

Beach at Port de Pollença

At Port de Pollença the beach is spacious, has all amenities, parking along the seafront, and if it gets too hot there is a little playground in a small wood for a respite from the sun.

Caves of Campanet

The beautiful Caves of Campanet, found by a shepherd about 100 years ago, are not too far away and worth a visit to see the fascinating stalagmite and stalactite formations. These caves are not too commercialised and visits are on the hour. For the most impressive caves, go to Portocristo on the east coast and visit the Caves of Drach which houses one of the largest underground lakes in Europe.

Formentor beach and lighthouse

A scenic drive will take you to Formentor Lighthouse - the road is quite narrow in places. At the top of the hill out of Port de Pollença, it is worth stopping at the viewpoint to see El Colomer rock. Although the beach at Formentor is not very large, it has clear shallow water ideal for children and adults alike, with some good waters for snorkelling. Go early, with a picnic.

Fornalutx, Deià and Valldemossa

Drive over the Tramuntana mountain roads taking in the spectacular scenery, stopping at the various viewpoints including two lakes/reservoirs, and passing through several world-renowned towns like Deià and Valldemossa, home to famous painters, writers and musicians. Fornalutx is one of the prettiest towns in Mallorca.

Inca for a shopping expedition

A short drive on the motorway takes you to Inca which has a good shopping centre but also has several leather factory outlets including Camper shoes. Nearby is Puig de Magdalena (puig = hillock, pronounced pooch) with a little chapel at the top and a restaurant which serves good typical Mallorcan food while enjoying the most splendid view over the surrounding countryside.

Lluc is not just a monastery

Take the mountain road from Pollença to the Monastery at Lluc. Visit the museum and the chapel - you may be fortunate enough to hear the Blauets Choir singing. Make your way to the huge cross behind the monastery for the fabulous views out to sea.

La Reserva Aventur

A nature reserve, founded in 1986, with an area of 2.5 million m² located in the south-west of Majorca, in Puigpuñyent, some 17 km from Palma. La Reserva can be found at the foot of the Galatzó Mountain, one of the island's better known mountains standing over 1000 metres tall. The reserve has abundant vegetation of wide variety thanks to the range in altitude from the valley right to the top of the mountain, many are indigenous to Mallorca. There are also many animals including three brown bears, ostriches, emus, deer, wild donkeys, goats, peacocks and numeous geese and ducks, all of whom live amongst the caves, forest and waterfalls. There activities including rock climbing, zip wires and bridges, a bar with BBQ and picnic area, a pool with waterfalls, a prey flight demonstration and a petting zoo for the youngsters. Open daily all year round www.lareservamallorca.com/new/en/

Market days in Sineu and Inca

If you like bustling markets lining the streets, then Inca market on Thursday is the busiest you will find on the island. However, Sineu market on Wednesday is unusual as it still sells livestock such as goats, sheep, rabbits and ducks. The fresh fruit and vegetable market is up the hill in a smaller square at the front of the church.

Palma - Capital City

The capital of Mallorca is well worth a visit. The Cathedral, Almudaina Palace and Bellver Castle are very interesting historical buildings, then there are several contemporary art museums as well as plenty of shops.

The old ruined castle at Alaró

Make your way to the top of Castell d'Alaró - take water to drink as the last part of the journey has to be done on foot. The views from the top are breathtakingly beautiful! On the way down enjoy a meal at the Restaurant Es Verger where they serve tasty roast lamb done in a traditional Mallorcan oven.

Snorkelling at Mal Pas

If you would like to do some snorkelling in clear, deep water, go towards Alcúdia, turn off towards the La Victoria headland until you reach Mal Pas. Beside a fish restaurant serving lobster (choose your own), there is an excellent area off the rocks for snorkelling.

Paella on the beach

Spend a day at the beach between Ca'n Picafort and the area east of Alcúdia, at Ses Casetes des Capellans, where you can enjoy a tasty paella or seafood dishes at one of the beach restaurants while enjoying the sea and sun on a long and sandy beach.
