As we wandered through extensive grounds of shady palms and wild olive trees, delightfully criss-crossed by the stone walls so typical of Menorca, we were instantly charmed by the rustic ambience and seclusion of this attractive island home. When we then stepped out through the back gate and realised that one of the area’s most renowned restaurants is just 100m away in the picturesque village of Torret, and the shops, restaurants and pretty town squares of Sant Lluis only a 900m walk from here, we could not imagine a more ideal setting for a holiday.

Situated just outside the typical whitewashed village of Torret and off the road that leads from Sant Lluis to the island’s south-eastern beaches, La Casa en el Pinar is perfectly placed for exploring this picturesque corner of the island. Whilst a pleasant stroll to either the two village restaurants or a wider range of amenities in Sant Lluis will reveal a choice of venues for dining out and local shopping, the sandy beach of Punta Prima with its bustling ambience and promenade of cafes and restaurants is just a 5 minute drive away.

There can be no doubt, however, that this is a property at which restful days at home will also feature strongly on the holiday wish-list. Sitting amidst the greenery of its rustic grounds, the house oozes charm through its walls of traditional local stone, vaulted brick ceilings and exposed wooden beams, all of which are strikingly complemented by an eye-catching wall of floor-to-ceiling glazing and numerous patio doors providing a seamless connection to the outside.

Through the glass façade of windows and sliding doors that lines one end of the living room, the swimming pool can be seen outside, glistening invitingly. Surrounded by a selection of lawns and terraces, an in-built barbecue and another bougainvillea-strewn terrace for outdoor dining, this is the focal point of the outdoor area, whilst a wander through the grounds will reveal other shaded corners to which to retreat.

Do nothing but enjoy the surroundings, listen to birdsong, find a quiet corner in the garden and catch up on some reading, sunbathe, swim....

Hauser & Wirth

Whilst exploring the port in Maó, take a trip over the the Illa del Rei, which is a small island in the middle of the port, and visit the Hauser & Wirth art gallery.  There is also a former British naval hospital on the island, which is now a museum, to visit plus a bar and restaurant for refreshments.

Sant Lluis

This is the whitest of whitewashed towns and has a slightly different feel to the other Menorcan towns due to its French heritage.  It is a great place to explore, with lots of interesting independent shops, plus an array of bars and restaurants.

Visit the port in Maó

and take a trip around the harbour on the glass bottomed boat. This is the second largest natural harbour in the world, Pearl Harbour is the largest. It is steeped in history, especially from the British occupation, and the boat often stops outside the harbour entrance to see the underwater life through the glass bottom.

Have a stroll around Torret

This delightful village is full of extremely pretty, traditional Menorcan cottages and a very pleasant place to have a wander.   Another great restaurant, called Pan y Vino, is tucked away in the heart of the village.

Sa Pedrera des Pujol

is one of the oldest and considered to be one of the best restaurants in Menorca, and is literally a few minutes walk away from the house. Wander over and enjoy some traditional Menorcan dishes in a lovely setting.  Look out for special menus and events too

Make a splash

at the water park of the same name in Biniancolla.  There are slides to suit all the family from the dare devils to those who prefer to relax in a jacuzzi. With a bar on site, it´s a fun day out for the whole family.

Fiestas!

Sant Lluis celebrates its main festival in honour of its Patron Saint over the last weekend in August. Taking place over three days, following Menorcan tradition, the town's streets and squares are filled with horses, music, religious ceremonies, hustle and bustle and much merriment. Enjoy the lively atmosphere, enjoy a `pomada` or two, dance in the streets and celebrate along with the locals.

Check out the night markets

that are held throughout July and August.  They are not only great for shopping for locally made products, there is also street theatre, concerts, children's activities and all sorts of other things going on.  The atmosphere is lovely and  it's a great way to spend an evening.  Have a few drinks and tapas at La Rueda whilst there or at any of the other bars.

Go to Punta Prima

Punta Prima is a bustling resort with a large beach with soft golden sand and great range of shops and restaurants.  It´s also possible to go kayaking and paddle boarding there and visit the night markets in the summer months.

Place your bets at the trotting races

The tradition of trotting races dates back almost 100 years in the Balearics and is not practised anywhere else in Spain. An afternoon at the races is a must for any lover of equestrian sports and it is very child friendly. The Maó Municipal Hippodrome, on the Maó-Sant Luis road, holds races on Saturdays from 17.30 (May to October). Grab a table, order yourself a drink and place your bets!

Windmill

The Moli de Dalt windmill has been restored to its former glory and is now a small museum open to the public which houses a collection of traditional tools and craft objects

The "parc de recreacions"

is next to the roundabout just on the edge of Sant Lluis.  It's a great place to run and has outdoor gym equipment.

Take a wine tour with tasting

at the Bodegas Binifadet.  Stop for lunch afterwards in the restaurant that is known for its imaginative menu showcasing Menorcan produce

Walking

Take the Cami de Cavalls from just outside of Alcaufar and walk to Cala Sant Esteve.  Although there is no beach here, it is one of the prettiest little coves.  Fort Marlborough, built by the British in the 1720s is also located here and worth a visit.

Take a detour to Cala Rafalet on the way back.  The walk through the woodland is very pretty and this is a great place to snorkel and swim

Go back in time and see how the first Menorcans lived.

Visit Trepucó, part of the Menorca Talayotica world heritage site, and one of the largest settlements on the island.  A small section remains with 2 "talayots" and a "taula" and various walls and enclosures.   The settlement was built on top of older settlements and materials found there date back to 1300-1000 BC.
