Introduction
Situated just north of the picturesque inland lake of Zahara, the town forms an ideal base from which to explore the picture-postcard scenery of the surrounding area: the lakeside village of Zahara de la Sierra with its hilltop castle, the imposing peaks and abundant wildlife of the Sierra de Grazalema and the pretty whitewashed 'Pueblo Blanco' of El Gastor are all just a short drive away.
Shops & Markets
There is a fresh food market tucked away beside the Town Hall. This is where you can find local shops selling the famous Payoyo goats cheese, honey, seasonal fruit and vegetables, fish from Cádiz and meat, especially game. There is also a weekly flea market.
Activities
Algodonales is on the edge of the Sierra de Grazalema National Park, the ideal spot for hiking, cycling or other adventure sports. It is also possible to go kayaking on the lake at Zahara de la Sierra in the summer months. A fun option is to join a group at night and sail into the middle of the lake, only illuminated by moonlight and the lights shining down from the castle above.
A visit to Ronda, voted one of the most beautiful towns in Spain, is an absolute must. Here you will find the breath-taking gorge with its impressive bridge and viewpoints, as well as a wide variety of restaurants, bars and shops.
Pueblos Blancos
There are 19 white villages within the Sierra de Cádiz, the most popular being Grazalema, Zahara de la Sierra and Arcos de la Frontera, all a scenic drive from Algodonales.
