Large and beautiful beaches together with an enviable climate make this region of southern Galicia so desirable to locals and tourists alike. A short drive in one direction brings you to the town of Baiona, which boats numerous restaurants, shops and attractive buildings on narrow cobbled streets waiting to be explored. In the other direction are beachside towns, cafes offering tasty tapas and Patos beach, a surfer's paradise.
Eating Out
Playa America is host to a number of beachside restaurants and cafes, most serving traditional Galician dishes and tapas. Menu of the day is usually available in most restaurants at lunchtime and this consisits of a light 3 course meal, most likely home made and very reasonably priced.
In Baiona there is something for everyone, but the cobbled streets set back from the main road are worth exploring as they house a large choice of tapas bars with large terraces where locals gather and you will occasionally find live music. Here, you can eat and drink your way through the town late into the night.
Activities
There are numerous places in and around Playa America offering water sports. Patos beach, a short distance away, is the home of surfing and the surf schools offer lessons for all abilities. In Playa America itself, kayaks and pedalos can be hired, banana boats rides can be taken and you can even have a go at Stand - Up Paddle Boarding.
Some nice walks can be taken in the surrounding area. One place worth visiting is the Monteferro Park and Gardens which has spectacular views of the Cies Islands and pretty walks through woods and along the coastline.
The Cies Islands
Visisble from Playa America, The Cies Islands are a protected archipelago of islands, two of which are joined by a long stretch of white sand called Rodas Beach which was once voted the best beach in the world by The Guardian newspaper. A day trip to The Cies Islands can be taken by ferry from the nearby town of Baiona. As well as boasting the beautiful Rodas Beach, the islands have numerous hiking trails, an abundance of flora and fauna and a restaurant to enjoy.
