A haven from the too often frantic demands of modern life, on Meganisi nothing happens at a very fast pace and time, somehow, seems to go by more slowly! This is an ideal place for anyone seeking a laid-back, sun-soaked and naturally unspoilt oasis of gentle Greek charm.

Climbing gently uphill from the port of Vathi through lush countryside of olive groves and verdant greenery you arrive at Stamatina, one of only two beautifully appealing homes (sister villa, Kallia, sits privately alongside) to enjoy this privileged, quite outstanding location… plus the equally outstanding views that come with it!

Gazing out from the pool and terrace of this lovely property, a breath taking, far-reaching vista fills the eyeline. With the rugged peaks of mainland Greece, achingly attractive Skorpios island, indented coastline of nearby Lefkada and a shape-shifting panorama of sparkling sea all vying for your attention it is, to put it simply, impossible to choose a highlight!

Internally, comfortable furnishings, quality contemporary fittings and a pleasingly soothing décor of pastel shades, vaulted wooden beams and exposed stonework make this an easy and attractive house in which to feel at home. A bedroom and a shower room on each floor offer convenience as well as an added degree of privacy for sharing parties.

Being virtually equidistant between the three main settlements of the island - Vathi (2.5km), Katomeri (1.4km) and Spartochori (2.1km) - means that tavernas, minimarkets and shops are all easily accessible as are most of the island’s many, delightful cove beaches. A perfect vantage point from which to watch the yachts and colourful local fishing boats coming and going, a waterside table at Vathi for lunch or dinner is a delight with fresh local seafood, vegetarian dolmades and regional specialities such as rabbit and lamb regularly appearing on menus.

Location of Stamatina

Locality

Great Things to Do Near Stamatina

Spend the day at the beach

You are spoilt for choice here as the beaches all have crystal clear waters and are surrounded by lush greenery. They are rarely crowded, with some only accessed on foot or by boat.

Church of Agios Ioannis

On the western side of the island is one of Meganisi's most important churches, Agios Ioannis Prodomos (St John the Baptist). It is believed to have been built before 1477 AD.

Enjoy a leisurely lunch

... in the quaint harbour at Vathy where you will mingle with the locals and eat some of the best seafood. Idle hours can be spent watching the boats come and go.

Hire a boat

One of the best ways to see the island is by hiring a boat. You can explore the coastline and nearby islands including Skorpios, formerly home to the famous Onassis family.

Put your feet up!

Take advantage of the tranquillity and slow pace of Meganisi – switch off and relax, read a book, or just soak up the sun whilst lazing beside the glimmering waters of your private pool.

Take a trip to Lefkada

Catch the ferry to Nydri and browse around the shops, have a spot of lunch, or try something more energetic such as wakeboarding or waterskiiing.

Island hiking

There are many old footpaths that cross the island leading to secluded beaches, small settlements and little chapels.

Go snorkelling

Don a mask and snorkel and marvel at the underwater world of rich marine life to be seen in the crystal clear waters of Meganisi's beaches.

Visit the Papanikolis Cave

This is the second largest cave in Greece, and its location halfway down the 'tail' of Meganisi can only be reached by boat. Once inside you will see crystal waters and a small beach. It also has historical significance, as during WWII a submarine hid in the water in this cave.

Feast of Sardines

This festival is held in the square of Vathi in July every year, and Sardines are the guest of honour! The celebrations include a main course of roasted fish and local wine, with the accompaniment of the traditional orchestra.

Take a Trip to Ithaca

Just 14 nautical miles from Meganisi, Ithaca is a lovely island to go for the day to explore. Similar in size to Meganisi, the ferry takes passengers from Spilia to Ithaca in just one hour and forty five minutes. Ferries operated by Lefkada Palace take place in the high season only and generally just once per week.

Spot the Sunken Airplane!

Strolling along the waterfront in Vathy, keep a look out for the seaplane which lies in the shallow waters. Head to the eastern side, almost opposite the church and near a house with blue shutters just behind you, where you can see if just off the edge of the quay.
