Spartochori to Church of
Agios Ioannis

Detailed Route

Starting Point: Begin from the picturesque Spartochori village, taking the asphalt road leading to Agios Ioannis.

First Intersection: You'll soon reach a crossroad. While the regional road beckons to the left, keep right, letting the sign guide you. The ravine will be your parallel companion on this stretch.

Decisions, Decisions: An imminent right turn will appear, which you should overlook. After a brief uphill of approximately 50 metres, another right turn emerges – this one you follow.

Through the Olive Groves: The olive groves that Meganisi is famous for will keep you company throughout this segment. Along the way, be on the lookout for a well on your left – a charming old-world feature.

Into the Wild: Eventually, you'll spot the entrance to a narrow dirt path on the left. Embrace the rugged beauty as you meander between holm oaks and forgotten olive groves. Here, the path might challenge you with its wild nature, thickening vegetation, and scarce clearings.

Back to Civilisation: As the wild path ends, you'll be greeted by a more recognisable country road. The vegetation becomes sparser, replaced by olive groves once again. As you continue your descent, an ancient cistern will appear on your left.

Beachfront: Moments later, the glistening beach beckons. Turn left on the asphalt road, letting the sea be your guide until the Church of Agios Ioannis comes into view.

Historical NoteLegend says the monastery predates 1477, having been razed by pirates who cast the saint's icon into the sea. It was later miraculously retrieved in a fishermen's nets. Remember to visit during the feast on June 24th, where locals celebrate with the traditional Lampardes – lighting bonfires and bravely leaping over them.Final Stop: Before retracing your steps, consider a dip in the sea. The view of the Lefkada coast and the distant island of Thilia is simply breathtaking.

Vathy Harbour to Atherinos Harbour via Katomeri

Distance: Approx. 8km

Begin and end your expedition at Vathy Harbour on this circular route. Initially, the trail takes you through an old village path leading to Katomeri, offering a glimpse into the local way of life. Upon passing through the tranquil Katomeri village, the journey meanders to Atherinos Harbour. From this point, the walk transforms into a coastal exploration, where you'll be captivated by scenic bays and hidden coves. As you complete the circuit, find yourself back at Vathy Harbour, having experienced a blend of culture, nature, and the rejuvenating sea. This walk is gentle, perfect for admiring the countryside and indulging in periodic swims.

Detailed Route

Starting Point: Begin your journey at the Church of Agios Vissarionas, Vathy Harbour (GPS: N38 39 826, E20 47 002, H=1m). This harbour is also the endpoint for the annual bicycle race commemorating the Ionian Islands' unification. Keep the square to your left, and at the road's end, turn right.

Historical Note – The Church of Agios Vissarionas dates back to the early 20th century, marking the end of a pestilence through the intervention of Agios Vissarionas, Metropolitan of Larisa. He's since revered as Meganisi's protector, and on September 15th, his feast day, the island has an official public holiday.

The Path Less Travelled: After a brief 60m walk, you'll spot two wells. Follow the dirt path, staying close to the stone wall on your left. As we ascend we bear left and soon, the path will transition to a paved section.

As you amble through the olive groves, you'll find another well to your left. The cemented uphill journey begins here.Staying on the paved road, head straight. You'll come across two sets of stone steps – take the left one, leading you to the main asphalt road.

Chapel of Agia Paraskevi: (GPS: N38 41 584, E20 38 091, H=770m): Arrive at this sacred spot. Don't forget to join in the festivities on July 26th, marked with traditional music and dancing.

Entering Katomeri village, descend the asphalt road. Approximately 50 metres before reaching the Agioi Apostoloi Church, turn onto a cement road on your right. As you proceed, you'll spot Atherinos harbour to your right in the distance.

Choices at the Crossroad: At the intersection, turn left, descending through more olive groves.Reaching another junction, head left towards Atherinos Harbour (GPS: N38 39 678, E20 47 954, H=2m). Keep left alongside the harbour. Once out of the harbour you will spot a downhill dirt road to your right, which you should take.

Now, relish the coastal walk, offering spectacular views of the landscape and the Nisopoulo islets. Along the way, you'll encounter four beaches, beckoning you for a swim.

Ambelakia Amble: Leaving the fourth beach behind, walk past a few private residences. You'll soon return to the shore, arriving at the small harbour of Ambelakia.

Reaching a junction, take the right, which will lead you to Vathy village. Navigate through the stone-paved roads.

End Point: Turn left to return to Vathy Harbour (GPS: N38 39 826, E20 47 002, H=1m).

Katomeri to Vathy

Distance: Approx. 16 km

Journey Overview

Embark on a coastal journey that circumvents the northern contours of the island, blending both asphalted stretches and rugged dirt tracks. From verdant harbours to azure coves, this walk promises a captivating experience of Meganisi's northern shoreline.

Village Beginnings: Begin your walk at Katomeri's village hall. Follow the signpost directing towards Loutrolimni – Babarezou.

Lake's Lure: 2 km in, a crossroad beckons towards Loutrolimni. A descent of 700 m leads you to a vast beach graced by a lake, where there used to be mineral water baths.

Backtrack and Beyond: Return to the initial crossroad, gearing up to explore Fanari. Nestled en route, this popular beach features a taverna and beach bar.

Lighthouse Legacy: Behind the beach bar, a footpath opens up to a lighthouse – the namesake of the beach. Here, feast your eyes on panoramic vistas of Kalamos and Akarnania.

Harbour Harmony: A further 1.5 km along the asphalt road introduces you to Atherinos harbour. Cradled in a deep bay, the six windmills lining the opposite bank stand as the region's tallest. The harbour, a tranquil haven for fishing vessels and yachts, also hosts a welcoming taverna.

Coastal Curves: Eschewing the left route to Katomeri from Atherinos, opt for the dirt track hugging the other side of the bay. This path ushers you to the next bay – Ampelaki, a verdant paradise.

Cove Cascade: With each twist and turn, unveil a succession of petite coves. These aquatic pockets, shimmering in shades of blue-green, are fringed by overhanging branches swaying gently with the sea's rhythm.

Ampelaki Attractions: Ampelaki, the largest among these coves, offers two tavernas, each paired with its own boat mole. 

Harbour Homestretch: Nearing the harbour, the route metamorphoses into a paved pathway. Crossing Pasoumaki beach, your journey culminates at the serene Vathy harbour.
