Places of interest near Kalkan, Turkey

Kalkan is mostly about two types of very different holiday, mixed into one. An archaeological experience exploring Turkey’s ancient past, combined with a beach holiday and water sports.

Xanthos

Take a look at some of the incredible places of interest in the vicinity of the stunning Kalkan.

Xanthos, the Ancient City

Xanthos is an amazing collection of rocks, ruins, amphitheatre and standing pillars. It is situated on a hill overlooking the river and extensive agriculture in the valley below. The acropolis is most certainly worth a visit. Xanthos’ history has been magnificent and turbulent; it was one of the large cities of the Lycian Federation, built above the ancient city of Antiphellos, which dates from the 4th Century B.C. The “Harpy Tomb” that can be visited, got its name from the winged figures in the friezes that were harpies from Greek mythology, having a head of a woman and a body of a bird.

Tlos has further ruins worth visiting, and is dominated by its acropolis and many tombs that are honeycombed in the rock.

Boat trips

Boat trips in particular are a must and necessary to actually gain access to some areas. A favourite attraction is snorkelling from the boats, and having great food on isolated beaches. Take the 10 minute dolmus round to Kaputas beach, which is a fantastic sandy cove beneath a mountain gorge. You will need to take everything with you, as there is nothing but sandy beach and peace. On the other hand, the main resorts have, banana boats, rings, water skiing, jet skiing, pedalos and canoeing.

Saklikent Gorge

Another favourite spot is the gorge of Saklikent, which is the second-largest gorge in Europe, and always a popular excursion. It is open from April until September. Beware of the icy water that you will have to wade in. The high cliff sides are an amazing sight, towering above you.

This gorge is actually 20 kilometres long, and parts are so narrow you have to squeeze over large boulders. The benefits when you finish are pleasant restaurants with Turkish seating over the river, great to relax and enjoy a meal. However you could raft down the river on rings, and relax on Patarra beach. After a day or two visiting ruins you may need this beach that stretches 20km westwards.
