Why South West France makes a fabulous holiday destination all year round

There is much to see and do in South West France, making it a great choice for a family holiday. The area is blessed with mild temperatures throughout the year, but sufficient rain to make it a wonderfully green and verdant destination, whenever you wish to visit. The beaches are popular right through from spring until late autumn and the mountains, wooded valleys, river gorges and charming medieval villages are stunning at any time.

Out of season is ideal for outdoor activities such as walking, hiking and cycling. Canoeing, golf and skiing are also there for the taking in the diverse landscape of South West France. Fishing enthusiasts will also be at home, as salmon, carp and trout fishing, is plentiful in this part of the country.

There are numerous opportunities to swim in natural lakes; many have facilities for safe bathing and picnic areas. The region is also peppered with bridleways and many equestrian centres, for families that enjoy horse-riding.

For children seeking adventure, there are numerous adventure parks, such as Pradines near Cahors, with exciting climbing, swinging and generally zip-wire activities.

The Gouffre de Padirac, a large chasm that opens onto the limestone plateau of the ‘Causse de Gramat’, is a great experience for all the family. Or for those feeling less energetic, a boat tour will take you underground along a river amongst numerous stalagmites and stalactites.

The summer months in South West France are enlivened by music festivals, with jazz providing very popular, alongside an eclectic mix.

For windsurfing enthusiasts, head to Biarritz, or to Auch, Tarbes and Dax, if you want to visit charming traditional villages. St-Cirq-Lapopie is considered, by many, to be the most beautiful village in this part of France, and is a popular destination for artists. Cahors has the magnificent Pont de Valentre and is situated next to the looping River Lot.

St Céré is a bustling market centre, which is positioned at over 200m altitude and boasts stunning views of the surrounding countryside. This lively little town is a great place to buy as fois gras, truffles and cep mushrooms, and be acquainted with some of the fabulous local delicacies this part of France is home to.
