Mirador del Rio in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain

Take a trip to the incredible Mirador Del Rio, Lanzarote

Scaling the highest peak on Lanzarote you will be able to look down 500 meters on an archipelago of islands, and a landscape reminiscent of the moon in the other direction. You may be standing quite close to the Mirador Del Rio, without realising that a building is there.

Mirador del Rio in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain

Conceived by artist Cesar Manrique in the 1960s, the Mirador Del Rio camouflages itself in local pumas’ stone, blending perfectly with its surroundings. Designed to give people an exquisite view of the island from its panoramic windows, it serves as an information point, observatory and artist’s work of art, all rolled into one.

You can sense that every part of the Mirador was conceived artistically, rather than just for a function. The building is all curves and organic forms, both inside and out. The interior is utilised well with hidden spaces with big original sculptures.

From the restaurant the incredible sights take in the lovely village of Haria, which you should also take some time to visit. The view from up here, which can be expanded by walking up some extra steps, also extends to the islands of La Graciosa and Alegranza, as well as the local beaches such as Playa del Risco, and the pink ruins of the Salinas del Risco, plus the straits of El Rio!

Once you have driven up this site is easily manageable by most people, including senior citizens and those who use wheelchairs. Children are quite safe and cannot fall off any edges.

Lanzarote is a great island for a family holiday. Here are a couple of accommodation suggestions for those who wish to be independent and self-cater.
