Three must see inland villages on Corfu

From the heady night scene of the livelier resorts to tranquil hilltop villages where time seems to have stood still, Corfu is a thoroughly diverse island that has something for everyone.

If you are of the latter persuasion and yearn peace and solitude on holiday then you’re in for a treat, as Corfu is awash with timeless villages, surrounded by nature at its most beautiful.

Lakones

Take a look at the following three must see inland villages on this rather special Greek island.

Lakones

This traditional and picturesque village is nestled on the lush slopes of a verdant hillside, not far from Angelokastro Castle and above the beach resort of Paleokastritsa.

The area is bursting with interesting hillside trails, many of which eventually lead to the sea, and is the perfect spot for walkers to become acquainted with the island’s unique natural beauty.

From quaint churches to 18th century houses and traditional shops, not to mention Greek ladies wearing traditional robes, at the village of Lakones it really does feel like you have stepped back in time.

Ano Korakiana

Just 19 kilometres from the hustle and bustle of Corfu Town lies the historical settlement of Ano Korakiana. This picturesque village was first inhabited during the medieval times and still retains some of its ancient features.

With a total of 37 churches, Ano Korakiana is well-known for being a village scattered with traditional, pretty churches. The village proudly clings to its traditional cultural past, vibrantly portraying its history of folklore and ceramic art.

Overlooking the vast plains of Corfu’s eastern side, brimming with fruit orchids and olive groves, Ano Korakiana boasts a tremendous position – just remember to take your camera!

Nymphes

Having been described as ‘Corfu’s hidden gem’, Nymphes village on the island’s northern side, is waiting to be discovered.

The village is fed by waterfalls, hence how this region of Corfu is especially verdant and fertile. According to folklore, nymphs used to bath in the crystal clear waterfalls that tumble into the middle of the village.

Asides visiting the stunning wells and waterfalls in the village, another must see feature of Nymphes is the Agriculture Co-operative, which produces mouth-watering sweets and liqueurs.
